How good are the Arizona Cardinals this season? Well, lets just put it this way: No one on the team was even alive the last time the Cardinals had sole possession of the No. 1 seed in the NFC this late in the season.

At 6-1, the Cardinals are a half game ahead of Detroit and Dallas for the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC heading into Week 9.

The last time the Cardinals had sole possession of the top record in the NFC this late in the season came in 1974 when the St. Louis Cardinals were 9-2 after Week 11.

Baseball? Football? Things were confusing in St. Louis in the 70's. The Cardinals didn't move from St. Louis to Arizona until after the 1987 season.

Back to 1974 though, the Cardinals ended the season at 10-4, which was tied with the Los Angeles Rams, Vikings and Redskins for the best record in the NFC. Things didn't end up working out that season for the Cardinals, who lost 30-14 in the first round of the playoffs at Minnesota.

St. Louis was coached that year by offensive mastermind Don Coryell.

Fortunately for this year's team, no one on the roster remember's that playoff loss because no one was born yet. The oldest player on the Cardinals' current roster is long snapper Mike Leach, who was born in 1976.
