Andrew Luck is going to get to celebrate America's birthday in style. The Colts quarterback is prepped to ink a new contract, according to the guy with whom he's negotiating.

Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay told multiple reporters at the 2016 NFL owners' meetings the team is prepared to work out a deal with Luck before July 4.

The Luck extension will be interesting. He's going to be the highest-paid player in football. (Eventually Aaron Rodgers of the Packers will pass him by and then later Luck will probably jump Rodgers again.)

The extensions given out to quarterbacks lately portend a massive deal for Luck and Irsay recently confirmed as much, saying it would be "shocking" how much money Luck got.

"It's going to be a big number," Irsay said. "It's going to be a shocking number, nine figures and probably a $20 million starting point per year, but again we will find the right number to get to."

What's interesting about those comments is there's nothing "shocking" about a nine-figure deal for a guy like Luck, nor is there anything shocking about $20 million per year.

10 quarterbacks make over $20 million a year in average annual value (per OverTheCap.com) and seven quarterbacks got a nine-figure deal.

It would be shocking if Irsay handed Luck $25 million a year or 10 figures. The numbers he's talking about are borderline standard for a quarterback of Luck's skills and age.

One could even reasonably deduce Irsay is attempting to make it look like he's willing to spend all the money on his quarterback but secretly attempting to sandbag Luck's crew.

It's the sort of thing someone taking reporters onto his private yacht to talk about the state of the franchise would do, really.

Oh. OK then.

At the end of the day the only thing that matters is the guaranteed money in the deal. It would be shocking if Luck got less than Rodgers ($54 million) or Joe Flacco ($44 million) in guaranteed money.
