Robert Griffin III's 'selfish streak' discovered week before 2012 NFL Draft
According to one scout, likely No. 2 pick Robert Griffin III has a "selfish streak" and "doesn't treat people good." This is somewhat odd to find out for the first time just one week before the NFL Draft.
Lucky for Robert Griffin III, the ridiculous character concerns only popped up a week before the draft, instead of, as was the case with Cam Newton, during the entire pre-draft process.
But they're here now, thanks to a report from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Bob McGinn, who quotes one unnamed scout as saying Griffin has a "selfish streak" and "doesn't treat anybody good."
"As much as is written about [Griffin's] athleticism, his athleticism under duress in the pocket isn't even close to Cam Newton's," one of several scouts told McGinn. "This guy, the only way he gets big plays with his feet is if he's got a wide-open field and the sea opens for him. He's got a little bit of a selfish streak, too. Everybody was laying on Cam, but for some reason this guy has become gloves off. He doesn't treat anybody good."
I'm not friends with RG3. I've never met him. He seems like a good dude. Maybe his super-stardom's gone to his head, but it seems hard to imagine that he "doesn't treat anybody good." Or, you know, well.
It's also absolute poppycock to use "a selfish streak" as a reason to rip on a quarterback. You want your quarterback to be selfish. You need your quarterback to be selfish. If your quarterback isn't selfish, then he's probably not confident enough to lead the team, and he could very well end up washing out because he can't handle the NFL.
And all of that also completely ignores the timing of this news: one week before the draft, soon after news of the Colts informing Andrew Luck that they'd take him with the No. 1 pick began to circulate. That's not saying it's the Colts disseminating this, but the timing is odd, and it doesn't sound like Indy and Griffin are necessarily best buds.
It doesn't really matter anyway. If Griffin's some selfish jerkstore, he'll have plenty of veterans and coaches to help curb that attitude. And besides, being selfish is still better than being Rex Grossman.
