The Anaheim Ducks expected to be able to add Sheldon Souray back into the lineup this season, bolstering its solid defensive corps, but that won’t be happening. According to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com, Souray is slated to undergo surgery on his wrist Friday, effectively ending his season before it ever began.
Souray has not played a game this year after suffering a wrist injury in the offseason. He was terrific for the Ducks last season with 17 points in 44 games. The Ducks should get Luca Sbisa back into the lineup soon as he recovers from a hand injury, but Souray certainly would have been a nice addition as the Ducks gear up for a playoff run.
Anaheim has a relatively young defensive corps with Cam Fowler, Sami Vatanen and Hampus Lindholm all playing sizable roles on the blue line. Veterans Francois Beauchemin and Bryan Allen shore things up on the back end, but the Ducks may need to consider adding another veteran to the mix to solidify the blue line for the postseason.
The 37-year-old Souray has dealt with injuries throughout his career and even spent an entire season in the AHL after a contract dispute with the Edmonton Oilers. He had enjoyed a bit of a career renaissance the last two years between the Dallas Stars and Anaheim, so it’s unfortunate he’ll miss the rest of this year with the Ducks playing so well. Souray is still under contract for next season.
