Hummel ended up being the casualty with the Giants needing to open up a 40-man roster spot for shortstop Nick Ahmed, who secured his spot on San Francisco's Opening Day roster after attending spring training as a non-roster invitee. If the Giants aren't able to find any takers for Hummel via trade, he'll be exposed to waivers.
