McGowin was optioned to Triple-A Fresno on Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports. McGowin spent just two days in the big leagues and did not make an appearance. He'll make way on the roster for Fernando Rodney and Jonny Venters, who both had their contracts selected Tuesday.
McGowin was recalled from Triple-A Fresno on Sunday. McGowin was sent back to the minors earlier in June after allowing 11 runs over 10 innings with the Nationals. The 27-year-old brings a fresh arm to the bullpen while Joe Ross makes his way back to Fresno.
McGowin was optioned to Triple-A Fresno on Saturday, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports. McGowin covered 10 innings over three appearances -- including a spot start -- since his promotion in mid-May and allowed 11 runs on 14 hits. Trevor Rosenthal (illness) was activated off the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move.
McGowin recorded his first career save in Wednesday's 14-4 rout of Atlanta, allowing four runs on five hits over three innings while striking out six. The right-hander was shifted to the bullpen when Anibal Sanchez was re-instated from the injured list earlier in the day, and McGowin wasn't exactly entrusted with high-leverage work, taking over from Sanchez with a 14-0 lead in the seventh. He now has a 9.90 ERA and 11:2 K:BB through 10 innings, having served up three homers in that stretch -- including a grand slam to Austin Riley on Wednesday.
McGowin allowed five runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk across four innings in a no-decision against the Marlins on Friday. The 27-year-old lasted a little longer into his second career major league start, but the stat line wasn't much better. In two career starts, he's allowed a run per inning and opposing hitters have batted .310. He also has a 1.57 WHIP and five strikeouts in seven innings. As long as Anibal Sanchez (hamstring) returns as expected next week, McGowin won't remain in the Nationals rotation.
