Cantillo will be out 8-to-10 weeks due to a left hamstring strain he sustained at the end of spring training, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Cantillo gave up four runs on three hits and four walks while striking out five over seven innings in spring training, and the Guardians optioned the left-hander to Triple-A Columbus on March 12. The hamstring strain occurred at the end of spring training, and will result in Cantillo missing at least the first two months of the minor-league season.... See More ... See Less

Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Optioned to Triple-A
The Guardians optioned Cantillo to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Cantillo will be rotation insurance for the Guardians at Columbus to start the season. The left-hander has missed plenty of bats int the minors but needs to get his control in order before being considered for a big-league promotion.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Shaky command Wednesday
Cantillo allowed a run on a hit and a walk over two innings in Wednesday's Cactus League start versus the Diamondbacks. Cantillo pitched a clean first inning, but a walk, two wild pitches and a double led to Arizona's first run in the second. It's encouraging to see Cantillo work as a starter this spring, but with just over half a season of experience at the Triple-A level (4.64 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 111:55 K:BB), it's fairly likely the 24-year-old will need more time with Columbus this season. Logan Allen (shoulder) has yet to make his spring debut, but the Guardians have veteran Carlos Carrasco in camp as an NRI, so Cantillo doesn't have a clear path to the No. 5 spot in the rotation.... Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Promoted to Triple-A
The Guardians promoted Cantillo from Double-A Akron to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Cantillo has been electric with Akron so far this season, posting a 1.85 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 35 punchouts over 24.1 innings . The left-hander will now move one step closer to the big leagues and look to remain just as effective at the next level.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Joins 40-man roster
Cantillo (shoulder) was added to the Guardians' 40-man roster Tuesday. Cantillo had a 1.93 ERA through 14 outings with Double-A Akron last season but missed the final two months of the campaign with shoulder soreness. The injury won't prevent him from being added to the 40-man roster as Cleveland protects him from the Rule 5 draft.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Out with shoulder injury
Cantillo (shoulder) was placed on the injured list at Double-A Akron this week. Cantillo threw three scoreless innings versus Harrisburg on July 30, but he's since been diagnosed with left shoulder soreness. The southpaw has impressed at the Double-A level with a 1.93 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 87:28 K:BB across 14 appearances (13 starts), though his 4.2 BB/9 leaves some room for improvement. It's unclear when he'll be ready to return.... See More ... See Less -
Indians' Joey Cantillo: Rehabbing in Arizona
Cantillo (abdomen) made his first rehab appearance in the Arizona Complex League on Friday, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out two over two scoreless innings. Cantillo has been sidelined all year with the abdominal injury, but he's finally on the way back. The 21-year-old southpaw was part of Cleveland's return in last August's Mike Clevinger trade. It's unclear how many more rehab appearances Cantillo will need before he's able to link up with Double-A Akron.... See More ... See Less -
Indians' Joey Cantillo: Managing abdominal soreness
Cantillo was placed on the seven-day injured list with abdominal soreness Saturday. Cantillo has been assigned to Double-A Akron to begin the minor-league season, but he hasn't yet made his 2021 debut. The severity of his injury isn't yet known.... See More ... See Less -
Indians' Joey Cantillo: Part of Clevinger return
Cantillo is one of six players sent from San Diego to Cleveland on Monday in the Mike Clevinger deal, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Cantillo is at least a moderately interesting pickup for Cleveland, though he won't be making a big-league impact any time soon, as he's only made three starts at the High-A level. He's a classic left-handed back-end starter prospect, at least judging by his stuff, as his fastball sits in the high 80s but is complemented by a potentially plus changeup. That doesn't necessarily make him sound like a strikeout arm, though he did strike out 34.7 percent of batters in 19 starts for Low-A Fort Wayne last season, en route to a 1.93 ERA. He may have a tougher time fooling higher-level hitters, though he could also grow into more velocity, as he's just 20 years old.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Joey Cantillo: Invited to summer camp
Cantillo will be part of the Padres' 60-man summer camp. Cantillo has a chance to develop into a No. 3 or No. 4 starter if all goes well in the coming years, but he has only made three starts at High-A, logging a 4.61 ERA as his walk rate spiked to 11.1 percent, so he is not ready to face MLB hitters. His inclusion was more for developmental purposes than to help the big-league team win games in 2020.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Joey Cantillo: Likely to open season at High-A
Cantillo is expected to begin the 2020 campaign with High-A Lake Elsinore, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Cantillo began last season with Low-A Fort Wayne, dominating with a 1.93 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 128:27 K:BB over 98 innings. He then moved up to the California League, allowing seven earned runs over three starts for Lake Elsinore before he was shut down for workload reasons. The 20-year-old had some control issues in his brief stint at the High-A level -- he walked seven batters over his 13.2 frames -- but he continued to display swing-and-miss stuff with 16 strikeouts. Given his minor-league success thus far, Cantillo could be a quick climber through the Padres' system.... See More ... See Less
