Ervin cleared waivers Saturday and was outrighted to Atlanta's alternate site, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. Ervin's .247/.322/.406 slash line through 660 career plate appearances at the highest level is nothing special, but it's still somewhat surprising that none of the other 29 teams found him worthy of at least a fifth outfielder spot. He'll remain a depth option in Atlanta going forward.... See More ... See Less

Braves' Phillip Ervin: Designated for assignment
Ervin was designated for assignment by Atlanta on Saturday. Ervin was claimed off waivers by Atlanta prior to spring training and hit .276 with two RBI and one stolen base in 18 spring games this year. However, he was unable to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster and could have to settle for a minor-league role to begin the regular season.... See More ... See Less -
Braves' Phillip Ervin: Claimed by Atlanta
Ervin was claimed off waivers by Atlanta on Monday. Ervin now finds himself with his fourth organization in the last six months. He opened last year with the Reds before being dropped from the roster in August and claimed by the Mariners, where he spent the rest of the campaign. He then spent a pair of months in the Cubs' organization over the winter before being waived and picked up by Atlanta. The constant moves align with Ervin's resume, as his career .247/.322/.406 line in 660 career plate appearances is good enough to deserve a bench spot but not good enough that any given team feels compelled to guarantee him a job. Whether or not he finally finds stability in Atlanta remains to be seen.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Phillip Ervin: Dropped from roster
Ervin was designated for assignment Saturday, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. Ervin was claimed off waivers from Seattle in December, but the Cubs evidently no longer saw the need to keep him around after signing Jake Marisnick to be a bench outfielder. Ervin's track record suggests that he'd make a fine bench outfielder himself, as he owns a career .247/.322/.406 line and can fill in at center field, but the fact that he hit just .149/.292/.189 in 89 trips to the plate last season may scare away potential suitors.... Cubs' Phillip Ervin: Claimed by Cubs
Ervin was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Tuesday. Ervin appeared in 37 games for the Reds and Mariners last season but had very little success, hitting just .149/.292/189. He hit a respectable .262/.326/.438 over his first three partial seasons, however, making him at least a decent bench option if he returns to form.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Phillip Ervin: Loses roster spot
The Mariners designated Ervin for assignment Wednesday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. The transaction opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for reliever Keynan Middleton, whom the Mariners signed to a one-year deal in a corresponding move. After being scooped up off waivers from the Reds in September, Ervin struggled at the dish during his one-month stint in Seattle, slashing .205/.340/.282 with three doubles and no home runs.... Mariners' Phillip Ervin: Not starting Sunday
Ervin is out of the lineup Sunday against the Athletics, Lauren Smith of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. Ervin is 0-for-10 with seven strikeouts in his past seven games and won't start in the season finale. Braden Bishop will bat eighth and start in right field Sunday.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Phillip Ervin: On bench for evening game
Ervin will sit for the second half of Saturday's doubleheader against Oakland, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Ervin struck out in both of his trips to the plate in the first game of the day. Tim Lopes will over in right field for the nightcap.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Phillip Ervin: Takes seat Friday
Ervin isn't in Friday's lineup against the Athletics. Ervin remains out of the lineup for the fifth time in the last six games as the Mariners begin their final series of the regular season. Braden Bishop will serve as the right fielder in his place.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Phillip Ervin: Losing playing time
Ervin is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros. Out of the lineup for the fourth time in five games, Ervin no longer looks to be locked into an everyday role. He's reached base at an acceptable .341 clip since being scooped up off waivers from the Reds earlier this month, but he's struck out 27.3 percent of the time and hasn't hit for much power (three doubles, no home runs).... Mariners' Phillip Ervin: On bench again Sunday
Ervin is out of the lineup Sunday against the Padres. Ervin is 0-for-8 with six strikeouts over his last four games and finds himself on the bench for the second straight contest. Tim Lopes receives the start in right field and will bat eighth Sunday.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Phillip Ervin: Not starting Saturday
Ervin isn't in the lineup Saturday against the Padres. Ervin will get a day off Saturday after going 1-for-8 with two RBI and six strikeouts over the past three games. Dylan Moore will take over in right field as Ty France starts at second base.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Phillip Ervin: Takes seat for nightcap
Ervin isn't starting Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader against the Athletics, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Ervin gets the night off after going 1-for-3 in Game 1. Tim Lopes draws the start in right field and will bat sixth.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Phillip Ervin: Productive day in series finale
Ervin went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, two runs and an RBI in Sunday's 7-3 win over the Diamondbacks. Ervin hasn't taken long to make a splash with the Mariners after Seattle claimed him off waivers from the Reds earlier this month. Through his first eight games with the club, Ervin has reached base at a .385 clip while smacking three doubles. He'll pick up his fifth consecutive start in right field Monday in the first game of the Mariners' doubleheader with the Athletics, batting seventh in the series opener.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Phillip Ervin: On base twice in loss
Ervin went 1-for-2 with a walk in a loss to the Giants on Wednesday. Ervin hit out of the bottom of the order while drawing the start in right field and hit safely for the first time since his team debut Saturday. The 28-year-old has seen regular playing time in the brief period since his arrival, but Ervin will likely need to give his current .104/.246/.125 line a serious boost soon to continue seeing the same number of opportunities over what remains of the regular season.... Mariners' Phillip Ervin: Claimed by Mariners
Ervin was claimed off waivers by the Mariners on Thursday. He was designated for assignment by the Reds last week. Ervin is known as versatile defensive outfielder who struggles against righties (career 75 wRC+, .228/.300/.372 line) but excels against lefties (120 wRC+, .290/.356/.490 line). Once he passes intake testing, he would likely occupy a short-side platoon role.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Phillip Ervin: Designated for assignment
Ervin was designated for assignment by the Reds on Friday. Ervin tallied just three hits over 35 at-bats this season, so the Reds decided to remove him from the roster and risk losing him on waivers. While Ervin has struggled in 2020, he is 28 years old and owns a career .846 OPS against left-handers, so he could garner interest from several clubs.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Phillip Ervin: Gets start in series opener
Ervin will man center field and bat sixth Monday agains the Brewers, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. With southpaw Brett Anderson twirling for Milwaukee, the lefty-hitting Shogo Akiyama will retreat to the bench to clear a spot in the outfield for Ervin, who is starting for only the second time in 12 games. Ervin owns a career 124 wRC+ against lefties, but he hasn't found much success in those matchups early on this season, going 2-for-17 with three walks.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Phillip Ervin: Leading off in opener
Ervin will lead off and play left field in Friday's Opening Day game against the Tigers. How exactly the playing time will break down in a crowded Reds outfield this season remains to be seen. It looks as though the right-handed Ervin will be preferred to lefties Shogo Akiyama and Jesse Winker in left field with a southpaw on the mound like Tigers' Opening Day starter Matthew Boyd. It's not clear if he'll play often enough against righties to have broader fantasy relevance, but the fact that he's leading off Friday is at least a good sign for his value in deeper leagues. He owns a career .907 OPS against lefties compared to a .687 mark against righties, making him an excellent fit for a platoon role.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Phillip Ervin: Near roster lock
Ervin is a near lock to make the Reds' initial 30-man roster when the season begins, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. This was already assumed back in March, when Ervin was playing well and Aristides Aquino was struggling, but the disclosure that Aquino will train at the Reds' secondary complex over the next three weeks cemented Ervin's spot. It helps that he's a right-handed bat when many of the Reds' other hitters bat lefty.... See More ... See Less
