Ivan Herrera took a big step forward last season at Triple-A Memphis, sporting a .291/.451/.500 batting line with 10 home runs and 11 stolen bases. He was also very productive during his brief time in the majors, slashing .297/.409/.351 with a 61.5 percent hard-hit rate in 13 contests. Herrera's strike-zone discipline has long been a strength, and he took it to another level in 2023 at Memphis with a 20 percent walk rate and 20.5 percent strikeout rate. His power hasn't fully unlocked to this point, due in large part to a bloated groundball rate, but given that he's still just 23 that part of his game might still grow. With Andrew Knizner non-tendered, Herrera is in line to serve as Willson Contreras' understudy in 2024. It's a role which garnered 63 starts and 241 plate appearances for Knizner last season, and a similar workload for Herrera seems likely. That's not enough playing time for Herrera to be very fantasy relevant, but he would have some upside if pushed into more responsibilities.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Getting break Sunday

Herrera is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Even though he served as the Cardinals' designated hitter the last two days rather than catching, Herrera will take a seat for the series finale in Chicago. Masyn Winn will get a day off from playing shortstop and will serve as St. Louis' DH, while Pedro Pages picks up a fourth consecutive start behind the plate. Though Pages' playing time has been trending up of late, he's still holding down a lowly .443 OPS on the season and still looks to be behind Herrera on the depth chart while top backstop Willson Contreras (forearm) is on the shelf.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Logs steal Friday

Herrera went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 3-0 win over the Cubs. Herrera is up to four steals this season, three of which he's recorded over 11 games in June. The catcher is batting .316 (12-for-38) this month, adding five doubles, seven runs scored and one RBI. For the season, he's at a steady .273/.335/.366 slash line with three home runs, 17 RBI, 22 runs scored and six doubles over 179 plate appearances. Herrera has started behind the dish just once in the last five games, though it's unclear why his playing time has dipped, as Pedro Pages has made little impact with his bat.

Herrera and Nolan Arenado both had three hits for St. Louis in the win, combining for over half of the team's total base knocks. Herrera helped generate a run in the fourth inning when he led off with a single, advanced to second on another single, stole third and crossed the plate on an infield hit. The backstop has four multi-hit performances through 10 contests in June and is batting .314 (11-for-35) overall this month.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Swipes bag Monday

Herrera went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Monday's 7-4 loss to the Astros. Herrera's two steals this year have come over his last eight games. The catcher has gone 8-for-31 (.258) in that span, but he has just two extra-base hits, one RBI and one run scored. For the season, he's batting .269 with a .691 OPS, three home runs, three doubles, 16 RBI and 15 runs scored over 150 plate appearances. While there hasn't been a lot of power in his bat, Herrera has hit well enough to maintain the starting job over Pedro Pages while Willson Contreras (forearm) remains out.

Herrera is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Swats second homer

Herrera went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two total runs scored in Monday's 5-3 extra-inning loss to the Phillies. Herrera has gotten an extended run of playing time while Willson Contreras (hand) remains out of the lineup. Over his last five contests, Herrera has gone 7-for-20 with two homers and four RBI. The 23-year-old gives the Cardinals another option for the designated hitter spot when the team is at full health, and he may force his way into the lineup even Contreras is healthy if he continues to hit well.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Homers in comeback win

Herrera went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, an RBI single and additional run scored in Thursday's 8-5 win over the Marlins. Herrera opened the scoring in the second inning with his homer, and his other hit sparked the Cardinals' five-run rally in the seventh inning. The catcher is filling in while Willson Contreras (hand) is unavailable. This was Herrera's second multi-hit effort in a row, and he's now 4-for-12 with four RBI and two runs scored over four contests this season. He's also yet to draw a walk while striking out five times, so there's still room for improvement with plate discipline.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Steps in for injured Contreras

Herrera will start at catcher and bat cleanup in Thursday's game against the Marlins. Herrera will pick up his second straight start behind the plate in Thursday's home opener. Both Herrera and top backstop Willson Contreras -- who served as the Cardinals' designated hitter -- were included in the lineup in Wednesday's loss to the Padres, but Contreras was hit by a pitch in left hand during the contest and is dealing with swelling a day later. Contreras is scheduled to undergo X-rays later Thursday as the Cardinals look to assess whether he's dealing with anything more than inflammation and soreness. For now, Contreras is being viewed as day-to-day, but Herrera could be in line for an extended run as the Cardinals' primary catcher if Contreras' injury is significant enough to force him to the injured list.
