Player Outlook
The son of former big leaguer David Ryan Weathers, Ryan was drafted seventh overall by the Padres in 2018. His time in San Diego came to an unceremonious end at the deadline last year when the team traded him to Miami essentially for two months of Garrett Cooper. The results only worsened after the trade as Weathers struggled to a 7.62 ERA and 1.92 WHIP in three appearances (two starts) with the Marlins. He brings decent velocity to the table for a starter, and Statcast suggests the lefty deserved significantly better results on his four-seamer last season (.340 BA, .232 xBA). Weathers still has a minor-league option remaining and would likely be best suited serving as depth at Triple-A, but injuries could force him into the Marlins' rotation to start the year. He will remain a tough sell in mixed leagues until he shows some sort of consistency at the big-league level.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Only one strikeout in no-decision

Weathers did not factor into the decision Monday against Atlanta, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out one. Weathers was looking steady against the dynamic Atlanta offense until yielding a two-run blast to Travis d'Arnaud in the fourth inning. The Miami lefty has been surprisingly effective in his first five starts this year, pitching to a 3.16 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 23:12 K:BB over 25.2 innings. Weathers is scheduled to make his next start against the Nationals at home.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Cleared for next start

Weathers (hand) is slated to start Sunday's game against the Cubs in Chicago, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Weathers experienced some cramping in his left hand late in his most recent start in Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Giants, but he had already tossed 90 pitches in the outing and wasn't likely to stay in the game much longer even if the issue hadn't cropped up. Before departing, Weathers notched his first quality start of the season, covering six innings and striking out 10 while allowing two earned runs on five hits and one walk. Through four starts this season, Weathers now owns a 3-1 record, 2.70 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 22:9 K:BB in 20 innings, numbers that make him worth a look in shallower leagues where he still might be available on the waiver wire.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Exits Tuesday's start early

Weathers was removed from Tuesday's start against the Giants after the sixth inning due to cramping in his left hand, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Weathers was removed for precautionary reasons, exiting after he tossed six frames of two-run ball during which he allowed five hits and a walk while striking out a season-high 10 batters. There doesn't appear to be any long-term concern for the left-hander, and considering he was at 90 pitches on the day, Weathers was unlikely to remain in the contest much longer. His status moving forward will receive an update following the game, but he seems likely to be ready to go for his next projected start Sunday on the road versus the Cubs.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Twirls five scoreless frames

Weathers (1-1) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing three hits and three walks with one strikeout over five scoreless innings against the Yankees. Weathers turned in his best start of 2024, holding the Yankees without an extra-base hit and not allowing a single baserunner past second base. While the 24-year-old lefty hasn't gone deeper than five frames this season, he's been a surprising source of stability on the Marlins' pitching staff, posting a 2.57 ERA with one home run allowed over 14 innings. However, with Braxton Garrett (shoulder) and Edward Cabrera (shoulder) nearing their returns, it's unclear if Weathers will take another turn in the Marlins' rotation in the immediate future.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Stuck with no-decision

Weathers didn't factor into the decision Thursday against the Cardinals. He allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out six over five innings. Weathers was solid for the most part Thursday, holding St. Louis to an Ivan Herrera solo homer in the second inning before the Cardinals tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the fifth. Weathers departed with a one-run lead, though the Marlins' bullpen couldn't make it hold up in an eventual 8-5 defeat. The 24-year-old southpaw is 0-1 while allowing four runs in nine innings across his first two starts this year. Weathers could carve out a more permanent role in Miami's rotation after it was announced that Eury Perez (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery. He's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Yankees in his next outing.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Takes loss to Pirates

Weathers (0-1) allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over four innings to take the loss to the Pirates on Saturday. Weathers was outshined by youngster Jared Jones, who had 22 swinging strikes to Weathers' 13. Weathers threw 94 pitches in total and looked much more like the pitcher we've seen over the years than the one who had a 3.00 ERA and 21:4 K:BB over 18 innings this spring. The Marlins need him with a myriad of injuries to the starting rotation, but Weathers has to be considered a high-risk gamble every time out, at least until he shows something more at the major-league level. He lines up for a road start in St. Louis next week.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Mixed results Friday against Cards

Weathers gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.1 innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. He struck out four. The 24-year-old southpaw is competing for an Opening Day rotation spot with the Marlins potentially down Eury Perez (finger), Braxton Garrett (shoulder) and Edward Cabrera (shoulder) to begin the season, so while Weathers' overall results Friday weren't all that impressive, the most important takeaway is that he built up to 79 pitches (50 strikes). Weathers has overall had a strong spring, posting a 21:4 K:BB through 18 innings, and the solo shot he gave up to Jose Fermin in the fourth inning Friday has been the only homer he's allowed.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Fans five against Yanks

Weathers allowed a hit and a walk over 2.2 scoreless innings during Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. He struck out five. The 24-year-old southpaw is on the fringes of the battle for a spot in the Opening Day rotation, but Weathers would probably need some attrition ahead of him in the pecking order to have a legitimate chance no matter how well he pitches this spring. A long-relief role seems more likely after he stumbled to a 6.55 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 43:29 K:BB through 57.2 innings last year split between the Padres and Marlins.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: On roster for opening series

Weathers is on the Marlins' roster for their NL Wild Card Series matchup against the Phillies. Weathers finished the regular season on a high note Sunday at Pittsburgh, scattering two hits and three walks over six scoreless innings in what was his longest start since May. The 23-year-old left-hander figures to operate in long relief in the best-of-three series versus Philadelphia.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Sharp to close out season

Weathers did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two hits and three walks over six scoreless innings against Pittsburgh. He struck out five. Called up for a spot start Sunday, Weathers delivered his first quality start since April 17, as he blanked the Pirates over six innings. However, the Marlins failed to provide any run support in an eventual 3-0 loss, leaving Weathers with a no-decision. The 23-year-old left-hander will finish the year 1-8 with a 6.55 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 43:29 K:BB across 57.2 innings between Miami and San Diego.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Promoted to start Sunday

Weathers was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville and will start Sunday against the Pirates, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The 23-year-old lefty made a couple appearances for Miami in August after being acquired from San Diego, and he'll rejoin the big club for one final start in the regular season. Weathers has struggled to a 7.32 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 38:26 K:BB over 51.2 innings between the two teams this year.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Sent back to minors

Weathers was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Weathers was knocked around in a start Monday against his former team, the Padres, and now finds himself back in the minors. The left-hander has collected an ugly 7.32 ERA in 14 appearances this season for San Diego and Miami.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Shelled by former club

Weathers (1-8) took the loss against San Diego on Monday, allowing five runs on five hits and five walks while striking out four batters over 3.1 innings. Weathers made his second start since the Padres traded him to Miami on Aug. 1, but neither outing has gone well. The southpaw has had trouble finding the strike zone in each outing, walking four batters against Texas on Aug. 5 and five versus San Diego on Monday. The walks were particularly harmful in the second inning, as Weathers loaded the bases on three straight one-out free passes before serving up a grand slam to Ha-Seong Kim. Weathers has surrendered 11 runs over seven frames while taking a pair of losses in two starts since joining Miami, making it hard to see him continuing in the rotation with the team still battling for a wild-card spot.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Recalled by Miami

Weathers was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. The Marlins listed Weathers as the starting pitcher for Monday's game against the Padres, and he will indeed toe the rubber as expected. Between the majors and minors Weathers has tossed at least 95 pitches in five straight outings, so his workload should not concern those considering including him in fantasy lineups.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Slated to start Monday

Weathers is listed as the Marlins' probable starting pitcher for Monday's game against the Padres, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Weathers was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville in early August after making his Marlins debut as a reliever, giving up six runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five in 3.2 innings against the Rangers. However, he looks likely to rejoin the major-league club Monday to serve as the starting pitcher against his former team. Whether he makes any starts beyond Monday will likely depend on how he fares against the Friars.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Up with big-league club

Weathers was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The 23-year-old was acquired from the Padres on Tuesday, and the Marlins didn't waste much time before bringing him up to the big leagues. Weathers has a 6.25 ERA across 44.2 innings this year and could provide some length out of the bullpen Saturday in Texas behind starter George Soriano.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Traded to Miami

The Marlins acquired Weathers from the Padres on Tuesday in exchange for Garrett Cooper and Sean Reynolds, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports. The seventh overall selection in the 2018 MLB Draft, Weathers never quite met the hype with San Diego. He'll get a change of scenery, though, and could prove to be a useful swingman for the Marlins down the stretch as some of their young pitchers are faced with workload limits. The 23-year-old lefty had registered a 6.25 ERA and 29:17 K:BB through 44.2 innings (10 starts, two relief appearances) this season with the Friars.

  • Padres' Ryan Weathers: Pummeled by Phillies

Weathers (1-6) took the loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Phillies, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out two. The Padres grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Weathers couldn't make it hold up for long, serving up a solo shot to Bryce Harper in the fourth and a three-run blast to Kyle Schwarber in the fifth. The 23-year-old lefty is expected to head back to Triple-A El Paso as his big-league struggles continue -- he's been tagged for at least four runs in five of his last seven starts for San Diego dating back to May 14, posting an 8.78 ERA, 1.95 WHIP and 18:12 K:BB in 26.2 innings over that stretch.

  • Padres' Ryan Weathers: Optioned to El Paso

The Padres optioned Weathers to Triple-A El Paso on Friday. After giving up six earned runs across 1.2 frames in his last appearance Thursday, Weathers will be relegated to the minors. He holds a 6.13 ERA during his Triple-A career, but he has thrown eight scoreless innings across two appearances in El Paso this season. Ray Kerr was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Padres' Ryan Weathers: Roughed up by Guardians

Weathers (1-5) took the loss against Cleveland on Thursday, allowing six runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out two batters over 1.2 innings. Weathers endured an ugly first inning during which he allowed five runs on five hits, including David Fry's first MLB homer. The lefty hurler was allowed to return for the second frame but was lifted after Jose Ramirez plated another run with a two-out double. This was the second time in his past three starts that Weathers has managed to get only five outs, and he's posted a horrid 9.93 ERA and 2.27 WHIP over five starts as the rotation fill-in for Seth Lugo (calf). Lugo progressed to throwing a simulated game Thursday, so Weathers' time in the rotation -- and on the big-league roster -- may be running out.
