Carpenter's teammate Jordan Gay was released by the Bills on Wednesday, ESPN's Mike Rodak reports.

Gay was used as a kickoff specialist last season and was brought in for the same potential role this campaign, more so than as a threat to Carpenter's place-kicking job. Despite missing six extra points last season, Carpenter has been reliable throughout his career, converting 84.8 percent of his field-goal attempt, including 96 percent (123 of 128) from inside of 40 yards. He has also made 13 field goals of 50-plus yards (on 19 attempts) in his three seasons with the Bills.
