The Cubs and Giants gave us a breathtaking pitching matchup in Game 1, with an eighth-inning Javier Baez home run ultimately being the difference in a 1-0 Cubs victory. We're now set for Game 2 in Wrigley Field with the Cubs holding a 1-0 series lead.

Kyle Hendricks (16-8, 2.13) vs. Giants

Though I think he ultimately falls just short, Hendricks is in the mix to win the NL Cy Young after leading majors in ERA and ERA+ (188). He struck out 170 in 190 innings, so while that rate isn't bad, he's more a pitch-to-soft-contact guy. In fact, he led the majors in soft-contact percentage this season. With a stellar defense behind him, he'll look to frustrate the Giants by inducing them into weak grounders and popups all night.

The Giants saw Hendricks once this year, on May 22, and he allowed only one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. Why the quick hook? Because Madison Bumgarner was carving the Cubs up and the margin of error was low. That came in San Francisco. This time around it'll be in Wrigley Field, where Hendricks was 9-2 with a 1.32 ERA and 0.86 WHIP this season.

Hendricks was also ridiculous in the second half, going 9-2 with a 1.68 ERA and 0.92 WHIP after the All-Star break.

No Giants player has faced him more than nine times, so the matchup data wouldn't be useful. Want a small-sample stud? Brandon Belt is 3 for 7 with a triple and home run against Hendricks.

Jeff Samardzija (12-11, 3.81) vs. Cubs

This is a fun one, because Samardzija was the Cubs' ace during the rebuilding period and ended up being shipped to the A's in 2014 as part of a big deal that sent Addison Russell to the Cubs. Now across the bay, Samardzija had a much better year than in 2015, posting a 108 ERA+, 1.20 WHIP and 167 strikeouts in 203 1/3 innings.

While he can be dominant at times, he's also susceptible to the long ball, particularly when he's away from spacious AT&T Park. In 18 starts away from home this season, Samardzija had a 4.03 ERA with 17 home runs allowed, compared to a home mark of 3.53 with just seven gopher balls.

He faced the Cubs in Wrigley on Sept. 1, and though he kept the ball in the yard, he allowed three runs on five hits and was removed after four innings.

The good news for the Giants, though, is that overall Samardzija was great down the stretch, pitching to a 2.45 ERA in his final 10 starts. He put up a season-high 11 strikeouts in his final outing, so he's a bit of a "hot hand" guy here.

Three Cubs have faced Samardzija at least 15 times:

Dexter Fowler: .292/.346/.625, 2B, 2 3B, HR in 26 PA
Jason Heyward: .154/.267/.385 in 15 PA
Miguel Montero: .273/.467/.455 in 15 PA

Might Chris Coghlan get the start? He's 4 for 11 with a double and two homers against Shark.
