The Rangers want infielder Jurickson Profar to be a key part of their team next season, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
They wouldn’t count on Profar to play every game, but Wilson said “120 is a nice target.” Profar, who has been near the top of prospect lists in recent years, could top that list entering next season. For that to happen, Ian Kinsler would likely get more playing time in left field, which would move Nelson Cruz to the designated hitter spot. Michael Young and David Murphy would lose playing time in this scenario, though Wilson expects Young to still platoon at first with Mitch Moreland. If the team cannot re-sign Josh Hamilton, Leonys Martin and Craig Gentry would be the likely platoon in center.
The team doesn’t expect to retain catcher Mike Napoli. He reportedly turned down a three-year, $38-million deal last season, and the club is unlikely to offer him a deal this offseason. The Rangers are looking for a catcher who can play 130 games at that position per season.
