Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Gets cortisone shot for wrist
Moreland (wrist) received a cortisone shot last week and still could require surgery this offseason, the team's official site reports.
The veteran landed on the injured list due to a tendon issue in his wrist Aug. 31, and he's running out of time to make a return before the end of the regular season. Team trainer Nick Paparesta acknowledged the need for a possible surgery "down the road", although the team and Moreland are set to wait out the effects of the cortisone shot for the time being before any further course of action is determined.... Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Back with team Monday
Moreland returned to the Athletics on Monday after being away for several days while getting alternate opinions on his wrist injury, the Associated Press reports.
The veteran has been on the injured list since Aug. 31 and doesn't yet have a firm timetable for any kind of rehab work or a return to action. Moreland was slashing an underwhelming .227/.286/.415 over 81 games prior to going on the shelf, with his season deemed a disappointment after he was expected to provide a more consistent left-handed bat.... Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Goes on IL with wrist tendinitis
Moreland was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with left wrist tendinitis, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Moreland hasn't played since going 0-for-3 with a walk and run scored in Thursday's loss to the Yankees, and him not appearing in the last three games seems likely to be due to the wrist issue. His move to the injured list is retroactive to Saturday, so he'll be eligible to be activated Sept. 7, though it's possible he'll require more time to recover. In his absence, Jed Lowrie becomes further cemented as the primary DH against right-handed starters, which should open up more playing time for Tony Kemp at the keystone.... See More ... See Less
Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Fades into reserve role
Moreland is out of the lineup for the third time in four games Wednesday versus the White Sox, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Moreland had a brief window of playing time reopen last week when Josh Harrison (quadriceps) and Elvis Andrus (personal) missed a few games, but both players have since recaptured everyday roles in the middle infield. Jed Lowrie will serve as the Athletics' designated hitter Wednesday and is likely to see most of the reps against right-handed pitching moving forward, leaving Moreland will no path to steady at-bats while Oakland is nearly at full strength.... The lefty-hitting Moreland will move back to the bench with a southpaw (Kolby Allard) on the bump for Texas. Moreland went yard in the fifth and ninth frames, contributing to the Athletics' 17-run offensive outburst Thursday. He now has nine home runs on the season, with this being his second multi-homer effort. Moreland hadn't gone yard since July 16, and he had collected only five hits in 32 at-bats in that span. Though he has become primarily a bench bat after the team acquired Josh Harrison, Moreland could be in line for more at bats if Harrison's quad strain keeps him sidelined.... See More ... See Less

Moreland is out of the lineup Sunday against the Rangers.

Moreland typically starts against righties and sits against lefties, but his day off here against right-hander Drew Anderson means he's now sat against two of the last three righties the Athletics have faced. Jed Lowrie will be the designated hitter in his absence, with Josh Harrison starting at second base.... See More ... See Less
Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Takes seat Tuesday
Moreland is on the bench for Tuesday's game against the Padres, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Moreland has gone just 5-for-29, albeit with four extra-base hits, since the All-Star break. He's hitting .228/.287/.386 this season, which are certainly underwhelming numbers for a designated hitter. Jed Lowrie is batting cleanup as the DH on Tuesday.... See More ... See Less
Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Sits versus righty
Moreland is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
The lefty-hitting Moreland didn't start in three out of Oakland's last four games, with all of his benchings coming against left-handed starting pitchers. Though the Padres will bring a right-hander (Joe Musgrove) to the hill for the series finale, Moreland will remain on the bench, an indication his hold on a strong-side platoon role at designated hitter could be slipping. Though he's fared well against righties for most his career, he's been a below-average hitter in those matchups in 2021, slashing .242/.298/.392 (94 wRC+) in 168 plate appearances.... See More ... Moreland was not in the lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Mariners, and he's on the bench again Tuesday since the A's are without the designated hitter in an NL park. It's only a two-game series in San Diego, so the veteran slugger should be back in the lineup for the upcoming four-game set against the Angels, which begins Thursday.... See More ... See Less

Moreland will be squeezed out of the lineup for a second straight day with no designated hitter available in San Diego.
