Notes from around the league on September's second Sunday:

  • White Sox designated hitter Adam Dunn could miss the club's entire upcoming series against the Tigers, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Dunn is still dealing with a strained oblique that forced him to miss two games last week as well. Dayan Viciedo has covered the designated hitter role for much of Dunn's absence and will likely do so until Dunn returns.
  • Mets starter Matt Harvey has two starts remaining this season before the team will shut him down, the New York Post reported. Harvey has thrown 157.1 innings this season between the majors and minors after throwing just 135.2 last season; with two starts left, Harvey will end somewhere near 170 innings. Harvey has been excellent for the Mets this season, with a 3.04 ERA and 3.15 FIP in 47.1 major league innings.
  • Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he would find a place for minor leaguer Darin Ruf to play if the Phillies bring him up after the Eastern League playoffs, Philly.com reported. Ruf put together one of the best offensive seasons in professional baseball this year, hitting .317/.408/.620 with 38 home runs for Double-A Reading. Ruf still doesn't project as much of a prospect -- at 26, he's very old for the league -- but Manuel seems to have enough belief to at least give him a September cup of coffee at the major league level.
