Player Outlook
Brett Wisely got some run at second base and in center field for the Giants last season as the team dealt with injuries and ineffectiveness at those spots. He did very little with the opportunities, putting up a lowly .497 OPS with a surprisingly-high 30.5 percent strikeout rate. The 24-year-old got on base at a .417 clip during his time at Triple-A Sacramento, and high walk rates have been a theme for him in the minors. Wisely had just a 6.9 percent walk rate with the big club, though, and he swung and missed way too much for a guy with an average exit velocity of just 85.9 mph. He'll compete for a utility job in 2024, but there doesn't look to be much of a path to regular at-bats.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Sent to Triple-A

Wisely was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento by the Giants on Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Wisely was in the running for a bench role but is sent out after going 3-for-16 in nine spring contests. The 24-year-old will provide utility depth at Sacramento.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Could see time at shortstop

Wisely is in contention for games at shortstop, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Wisely's likely best suited for a utility role if he breaks camp with the Giants, but shortstop is a thin position for the team. The unproven Marco Luciano is viewed as the favorite to start, while Casey Schmitt, Tyler Fitzgerald and Thairo Estrada could also see action at the position. Wisely isn't likely to be a great fantasy option after slashing .175/.231/.267 across 131 plate appearances in 2023.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Sent to Sacramento

The Giants optioned Wisely to Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Wisely came up from the minors on July 3 and has since slashed .132/.233/.158 across 43 plate appearances. He'll now attempt to get back on track in Triple-A while Brandon Crawford (knee) comes back from the injured list to fill Wisely's roster spot.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Sits against southpaw

Wisely is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The lefty-hitting Wisely will see his streak of nine consecutive starts at the keystone come to an end while David Villar mans second base in his stead as the Giants face off against southpaw Tarik Skubal. At least until Brandon Crawford (knee) returns from the injured list, Wisely should have a clear path to everyday playing time versus right-handers, and he was even included in the lineup in Sunday's 6-1 loss against the Nationals and southpaw MacKenzie Gore.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Getting regular burn at keystone

Wisely will start at second base and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Reds, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Wisely appears to have overtaken Casey Schmitt as the Giants' preferred option at the keystone with Thairo Estrada (hand) on the shelf; Wisely has now picked up five starts at second base over the past six contests. The Giants will have room for both rookies in the infield Monday, however, as Schmitt will start at shortstop while the lefty-hitting Brandon Crawford exits the lineup against Reds southpaw Brandon Williamson.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Back with Giants

Wisely was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento ahead of Monday's game against the Mariners, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Wisely will take the roster spot of Thairo Estrada, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with a fractured hand. Wisely provides the Giants with plenty of versatility, as he's drawn starts at second base, third, shortstop and in left and center field so far this season.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Optioned to Triple-A

Wisely was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Wisely will head back to Sacramento after Thairo Estrada (wrist) was activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Wisely appeared in 24 games after being called up from Triple-A on May 1, producing a .231 average with two homers, four doubles, six RBI, five runs and two stolen bases over 65 at-bats over those contests. The 24-year-old has the ability to play both in the infield and outfield and will likely return to the major-league roster again later this summer.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Takes seat Saturday

Wisely isn't in the Giants' lineup Saturday against Baltimore, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Wisely has logged a base hit in each of his last two games, but his .517 OPS over the last seven days will send him to the bench Saturday. Casey Schmitt will start at second base instead, allowing Brandon Crawford to start at short and bat ninth.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Takes seat against lefty

Wisely is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates. The lefty-hitting rookie has been serving as the primary replacement at second base for the injured Thairo Estrada (wrist) of late, but he'll take a seat for the series opener with Pittsburgh bringing southpaw Rich Hill to the mound. Casey Schmitt will check in for Wisely at the keystone.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Filling in for injured Estrada

Wisely will start at second base and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Brewers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. For the sixth time in seven games, Wisely will be manning second base, and he looks like he'll have some leash as the Giants' main option at the position after Thairo Estrada (wrist) was moved to the injured list Saturday. The lefty-hitting Wisely could find himself on the bench against select southpaws, though he appears poised to remain at least a strong-side platoon player while Estrada is on the shelf.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Pops second homer

Wisely went 2-for-5 with a double, a three-run home run and a second run scored in Friday's 15-1 rout of the Brewers. He took Freddy Peralta deep in the third inning as part of a seven-run frame for the Giants. Wisely's only other homer this season came May 6, but his .240/.269/.420 slash line on the month is a step up from his seasonal numbers, and the 24-year-old utility player could pick up more playing time at the keystone if Thairo Estrada's sore wrist becomes a bigger issue.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Sitting Monday against Phillies

Wisely is out of the starting lineup for Monday's contest against the Phillies, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Wisely will get a day of rest to open the series against the Phillies after going hitless in the three games against the Diamondbacks over eight at-bats. Casey Schmitt is starting at second base for the first time in his MLB career with Bryce Johnson hitting ninth and playing center field.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Hits first big-league homer

Wisely went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Brewers. Wisely gave the Giants some insurance with his seventh-inning solo shot, which was his first big-league homer. He's hit safely in consecutive games for the first time as well, though he's still slashing an ugly .100/.129/.200 with two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases through 32 plate appearances.

Wisely made the Giants' Opening Day roster, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Wisely was initially told he wouldn't make the Opening Day roster, but the Giants' last-minute moves opened up a spot for the versatile infielder. The 23-year-old will open his major-league career as a bench bat, and it's unclear how long he might stick with the big club.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Back in action Sunday

Wisely (illness) will start in center field and bat sixth in Sunday's Cactus League game versus the Athletics, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Wisely will add another position to his skill set by getting a look in center field. The 23-year-old is gaining a lot of attention in spring training and has a chance to make the Giants' Opening Day roster as a bench bat. If he continues to play well, he could push for a strong-side platoon role, as manager Gabe Kapler is fond of playing matchups. Over the last two years, Wisely has seen time all around the infield and in left field as part of the Rays' organization.

Wisely was scratched from the Giants' Cactus League lineup Thursday due to a stomach virus, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Wisely, who's had a nice spring so far, should be fine after a day or two of rest. Ford Proctor will play second base instead Thursday afternoon against the Brewers.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Turning heads in camp

Wisely is gaining attention for his work in Giants camp, Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports. Wisely was already set to get a look as a left-handed utility bat, and it appears he's been even better than initially expected. He's gone 3-for-10 with two home runs across four Cactus League games so far. He'll need to keep it up during spring games, but Wisely appears to have an edge over Isan Diaz for a bench role.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Sent to San Francisco

Wisely was acquired by the Giants from the Rays on Tuesday in exchange for Tristan Peters. The Giants then added Wisely to the 40-man roster. Wisely needed to be added to the 40-man roster in order to be protected from the Rule 5 draft, so Tampa Bay instead opted to flip him for Peters. Wisely appeared in five games at the Triple-A level late in the season, but he spent most of 2022 at Double-A and had a .271/.368/.450 slash line with 14 home runs and 31 stolen bases in 112 contests.
