Player Outlook
Brett Wisely got some run at second base and in center field for the Giants last season as the team dealt with injuries and ineffectiveness at those spots. He did very little with the opportunities, putting up a lowly .497 OPS with a surprisingly-high 30.5 percent strikeout rate. The 24-year-old got on base at a .417 clip during his time at Triple-A Sacramento, and high walk rates have been a theme for him in the minors. Wisely had just a 6.9 percent walk rate with the big club, though, and he swung and missed way too much for a guy with an average exit velocity of just 85.9 mph. He'll compete for a utility job in 2024, but there doesn't look to be much of a path to regular at-bats.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Comes up clutch

Wisely went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 5-3 win over the Dodgers. Wisely's third homer of the year was a walk-off blast against Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen. Since June 10, Wisely has gone 17-for-55 (.309) with two homers and seven RBI across 14 contests. He's at a .304/.333/.461 slash line with three homers, 14 RBI, 13 runs scored, one stolen base and seven doubles over 108 plate appearances this season. While the Giants have valued Wisely for his defensive versatility, he has most often been stuck in a platoon at shortstop. That could change after second baseman Thairo Estrada (wrist) went on the injured list Friday, though it's also possible Wisely continues to sit against southpaws in favor of Tyler Fitzgerald during Estrada's absence.

Wisely went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss to the Astros. • Giants' Brett Wisely: Sitting against lefty

Wisely is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Though he'll retreat to the bench with southpaw Cristopher Sanchez on the hill for Philadelphia, the lefty-hitting Wisely looks to have captured the strong side of a platoon at shortstop with the right-handed-hitting Marco Luciano, who gets the starting nod Wednesday. Wisely started in five of the previous six games, going 9-for-17 with a home run, a stolen base, five RBI and three runs.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Smacks first homer

Wisely went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Mets. Wisely has strung together three multi-hit efforts, going 7-for-11 in that span. The homer was his first extra-base hit of the campaign. That hot stretch has allowed Wisely to mount a challenge for playing time at shortstop, which has come at the expense of Marco Luciano. It's a battle the Giants will likely hope for Luciano to win in the long run, as Wisely is best suited to a bench role given his defensive versatility.

  • Giants' Brett Wisely: Grabs first hits, steal of season

Wisely went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one stolen base in Thursday's 7-6 win over the Pirates. Wisely's playing time has been sparse, but he went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts and one RBI over his first five major-league games of the season. He got the start at shortstop Thursday and delivered with a multi-hit effort, as well as his first steal of the campaign. The utility man hit .175 with a .498 OPS, two home runs and two steals over 131 plate appearances in the majors last year. Wisely can cover the middle infield and all three outfield spots, but it's unlikely he comes anywhere near steady playing time in 2024.
