The Los Angeles Rams have played two preseason games. In each game, Case Keenum started before being relieved of duties by No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff. It's expected that the same pattern will hold during the Rams' third preseason game against the Denver Broncos on Saturday evening.

Maybe something will change in the two weeks before the start of the regular season. Maybe not.

But coach Jeff Fisher, in responding to a question about the Rams-Broncos game hosting the NFL's final two undecided quarterback battles, indicated that he knows who his Week 1 starter will be.

The phrasing of Fisher's answer sure makes it seem like Keenum will be the starter in Week 1. He has a "pretty good idea" who it will be "but" Goff will start when he's ready. There'd be no need for a "but" there if Goff was already in line to start.

How unusual would it be for Goff to begin the season on the bench? Well, the last top-five pick quarterback to not start Week 1 of his rookie season was Blake Bortles in 2014, but the last No. 1 overall pick passer that didn't start right away was JaMarcus Russell back in 2007. (Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford, Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, and Jameis Winston were all Week 1 starters.) So, it would be quite rare indeed.

Considering what we know of Keenum's skill level and performance history, though, it probably won't be long before Goff takes over the job for good.
