Patrick Mahomes is off to the greatest start for a quarterback in NFL history. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback was on pace to shatter Dan Marino and Kurt Warner's passing records through 50 games, needing just a stellar performance in Week 1 to set a new benchmark for a quarterback.
Mahomes finished 27 of 36 for 337 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions (131.4 rating) in Kansas City's 33-29 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Mahomes has 117 career passing touchdowns, passing Dan Marino (116) for the most passing touchdowns through 50 starts in NFL history. Mahomes also passed Kurt Warner for the most passing yards (14,489) through a player's first 50 starts (Warner had 14,372).
Mahomes has played -- and started -- just 47 games.
"You love his attitude because he always feels like we're in it and he does such a great job with the guys around him," said Chiefs head coach Andy Reid after the game. "He's a great communicator. I mean, you guys know this when you talk to him, but he's a great communicator during tough times on the sideline.
"So, we can sit there and we can talk and I can kind of feel where his mind is going with things, and that helps."
Mahomes had another banner game in September, easily his best month. He's 11-0 in his career in September, when he has thrown 35 touchdowns and zero interceptions -- the highest touchdown to interception ratio by any quarterback in a single month in NFL history. Mahomes has averaged 331 pass yards per game in September and compiled a 125 passer rating.
Mahomes also had a rushing touchdown, which was the 11th of his career -- the most in Chiefs history (regular season and postseason). He also has 26 consecutive games throwing a touchdown pass, the longest active streak in the NFL.
The most impressive feat with Mahomes? The Chiefs have won nine of the last 11 games they have trailed by double digits with Mahomes at quarterback, including a 12-point deficit Sunday. Kansas City trailed 22-10 at halftime and 29-20 in the fourth quarter, yet still pulled off the victory.
The comebacks are what makes Mahomes so special. He is just putting up numbers -- and wins -- along the way.
"Yeah I think it's just you've been through these situations before with these guys, Mahomes said. "We obviously have new O-linemen and new players, but we have the core guys that have found ways to win if it was the playoff against the Texans, if it was Super Bowl or if it was last year when we came back and won all those games. We found ways to win at the end of the day and so you just have that belief in each other which makes you believe you can find a way to win any single game."
