The Colorado Avalanche will be playing in their first ever outdoor game this season when they host their longtime rivals, the Detroit Red Wings, at Coors Field in Denver. On Monday, the team held a press conference at the stadium to help preview the event and it featured the official unveiling of their jersey that will be worn for the game.

Have a look at Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog modeling the new threads, and pay special attention to the size of the numbers because, well, those are some big numbers.

Pictured at the top is a closer look at the comically large numbers on the sleeves, via Ron Knabenbauer of Avalanche media relations department.

There is a practical purpose for the numbers taking up so much space and being so darn large -- it's so fans in attendance, sitting in seats that are going to be significantly further away from the action than they are in a hockey arena, have an easier time identifying players on the ice.

More on the jersey from the NHL:

"As they did during the height of the rivalry with the Red Wings, the Avalanche, as the home team, will feature white as the main color of the jersey; a connection to the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies. The C puck mark becomes a powerful front crest, an unmistakable reference to Colorado hockey. Streamlined sleeve striping connects to the bold visual of the Avalanche stripe, part of the team’s socks since 1995. The modern styled collar features a 5,280 call out, referencing the Avalanche’s home in the Mile-High City."
