  • Avalanche's Gabriel Landeskog: Staying in Colorado

Landeskog signed an eight-year contract worth $56 million with the Avalanche on Tuesday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

It took until just about the deadline for Landeskog to sign a deal at maximum term to stick with the Avalanche. The 28-year-old enjoyed one of his strongest seasons last year, racking up 20 goals and 52 points in only 54 contests. The Swede will likely continue in his top-six role with linemates Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen, which should maintain Landeskog's value as a solid early-to-mid-round option at left wing.

  • Avalanche's Gabriel Landeskog: Won't be taken by Seattle

Landeskog has not signed with Seattle ahead of Wednesday night's Expansion Draft, so he won't be selected by the Kraken, Peter Baugh of The Athletic reports.

Landeskog has made it pretty clear that his preference is to remain with the Avalanche, so it isn't surprising to hear he wasn't able to come to terms on a handshake deal with the Kraken prior to Wednesday night's Expansion Draft. With Landeskog off the table, Joonas Donskoi appears to be the leading Colorado candidate to get snagged by Seattle.

  • Avalanche's Gabriel Landeskog: Left unprotected by Avs

Landeskog was not included on the Avalanche's protection list ahead of the Seattle expansion draft, Mike Chambers of The Denver Post reports.

With negotiations between Landeskog and the Avalanche not particularly close at this time, it makes sense the team left the unrestricted free agent off the protection list. The Kraken will be allowed an exclusive negotiation period with Landeskog and all other free agents prior to Wednesday's expansion draft, although it's unclear if there is any mutual interest between the two parties at this time. The Swede put up 20 goals and 52 points in 54 contests last season.

Landeskog had a power-play assist, two shots on net, two hits and one blocked shot in Monday's 4-1 loss to St. Louis.

Landeskog slipped a pass across the crease from the right side of the goal mouth to Nathan MacKinnon, who slid down from the circle to pocket Colorado's lone goal in a listless loss. The Avalanche captain has points in three straight contests. The team is in a stretch where it's getting point production mostly from the top line. Without scoring depth, opponents can marshal more focus on McKinnon's line. The scoring depth should become a bigger issue after Colorado announced Brandon Saad (lower body) will miss the next two to four weeks.
