The Royals optioned Newberry to their alternate training site Tuesday.
The transaction officially takes Newberry out of the running for a spot in the Royals' Opening Day bullpen. Since he still possesses spots in the Royals' 60-man roster pool and 40-man roster, Newberry could be one of the top relief candidates for a callup from the taxi squad if Kansas City should need further reinforcement in the bullpen at any point during the 60-game season.
