Baez will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Yankees. Per Chris McCosky of The Detroit News, Baez has been dealing with lingering low-back soreness, which may explain why the Tigers held him out of the lineup for Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Yankees. The sore back doesn't look as though it'll be anything that forces Baez to the 10-day injured list, but he could start receiving more frequent days off, especially if he continues to underwhelm at the plate. After turning in a .671 OPS and .592 OPS in the 2022 and 2023 campaigns, respectively, Baez has declined further so far in his third season in Detroit. He carries a .183/.228/.258 slash line into Sunday's contest.... See More ... See Less

Tigers' Javier Baez: Sitting Saturday
Baez isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Saturday's game against the Yankees. Baez will get a breather Saturday after going 0-for-4 with a strikeout during Friday's series opener. His absence will allow Zach McKinstry to start at shortstop while batting eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: Sitting Game 1
Baez is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals. The veteran shortstop sat for Sunday's series finale versus Kansas City and finds himself on the bench for Tuesday's matinee. Zach McKinstry is starting at shortstop, and Baez will likely rejoin the lineup for Game 2.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: Not starting Sunday
Baez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals. Baez started the previous seven games but will sit Sunday after he posted a .641 OPS during that stretch. Zach McKinstry will step in at shortstop for the series finale versus Kansas City.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: Scores twice in win
Baez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in Monday's 7-1 win over the Rays. Relegated to the eighth spot in the lineup, Baez managed to contribute, and he's been good over his last five games with a .350 batting average. The shortstop is still batting just .203 for the season, so he'll need more performances like the one he delivered Monday if he wants to get his overall numbers up to a more acceptable range.... Tigers' Javier Baez: Out of lineup Friday
Baez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Twins, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Baez has found some success at the plate recently with an .871 OPS across the past five games, but he'll head to the bench for Friday's series opener at Minnesota. Zach McKinstry will step in at shortstop and bat seventh.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: Doubles twice in loss
Baez went 2-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in Thursday's 9-7 loss to the Rangers. The doubles were Baez's first of the season, and he's still sitting on just one home run across 17 games. The shortstop isn't hitting a ton of singles either, as he's batting just .172. While he's shown an ability in the past to heat up quickly, his struggles the past few seasons don't instill a ton of confidence. Baez should continue to see regular playing time, however, giving him an opportunity to turn things around.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: Pops first home run
Baez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Twins. Baez has gotten off to a horrendous start, as he's batting just .140 with a .361 OPS even after the home run, which was his first of the season. The shortstop has had a rough time in Detroit the last three years, and his big contract is likely the main reason he's holding onto a starting role. However, the Tigers could choose to reduce Baez's playing time if he doesn't pick things up soon.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: Sitting for Game 1
Baez isn't in the Tigers' lineup for the first game of Saturday's twin bill versus Minnesota. After striking out three times and failing to record a hit during Friday's contest, Baez will take a seat to kick off Saturday's activities. Zach McKinstry will get the nod instead at shortstop and bat seventh.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: Not in Sunday's lineup
Baez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the A's, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Baez is 4-for-26 through his first seven games of the season and will take a seat for Sunday's series finale versus Oakland. Zach McKinstry will step in at shortstop and bat eighth.... See More ... Tigers' Javier Baez: Sitting out first game of twin bill
Baez is not in the lineup for the first game of Thursday's doubleheader versus the Mets. Zach McKinstry will get the start at shortstop in place of Baez. Baez is just 3-for-16 with a 6:0 K:BB in the early going this season. He'll likely be back at shortstop for the second contest Thursday.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: Taking seat Tuesday
Baez is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Mets. Baez had started each of he Tigers' first four contests, going 3-for-16 with a 6:0 K:BB. Zach McKinstry will fill in at shortstop Tuesday and bat ninth.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: Scores lone run in opening win
Baez went 1-for-4 with a run scored in Thursday's 1-0 win over the White Sox. He also stole a base. Baez manufactured the game's lone run in the third inning. He led off the frame with a single, stole second, then advanced to third and scored on a pair of sacrifice flies. While it's a decently promising start for the shortstop, it was concerning to see him bat eighth on Opening Day. Baez may be able to have a bounceback campaign in 2024, though it would help his cause if he's able to move up in the order.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: Spring struggles continue
Baez, who went 0-for-2 with an RBI in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins, is now batting just .050 this spring. Baez has gone just 1-for-20 with 10 strikeouts across nine spring games. Veteran players can often be given a free pass for slow starts, but with Baez struggling mightily in his first two seasons with the Tigers, the recent performance is worrisome. The 31-year-old should still have a fairly firm hold on the starting shortstop role, though fantasy managers may want to look elsewhere, at least until Baez shows any signs of getting going at the plate.... Tigers' Javier Baez: Trying to overcome nagging injuries
Baez revealed Friday that he's dealt with nagging back and core issues over the last two seasons, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Baez altered his offseason training routine in order to strengthen those areas and said he's now feeling much better. Perhaps the injury problems can partly explain Baez's dreadful .230/.273/.361 slash line during his two years in Detroit, but fantasy managers will likely need to see tangible improvement from the 31-year-old before investing.... Tigers' Javier Baez: Finishes down year with two hits
Baez went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Guardians. It was a nice game for Baez but a disappointing season, as he finishes with a .592 OPS, nine home runs and 59 RBI across 136 games. Excluding the condensed 2020 campaign, it was the first time the shortstop finished with fewer than 10 long balls since 2015. Baez has so far not come close to living up to the six-year, $140 million contract he signed with the Tigers before the 2022 season, though he figures to be a regular again in 2024 and will look to turn things around in Detroit. Baez does have an opt-out in his contract, though it seems financially unwise that he would take it.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: On bench Saturday
Baez is not in the lineup Saturday against the Guardians. If Baez does not appear in the game Saturday, he will finish September with a .642 OPS and one home run. Andy Ibanez will start at second base, with Zach McKinstry sliding over to shortstop.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: Taking seat Thursday
Baez is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Royals. The Tigers are going with Zack Short at shortstop in the final game of the series versus Kansas City. Baez had been in the lineup for each of the previous three contests.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: On bench Saturday
Baez (back) is not in the lineup Saturday against the Athletics. Prior to Friday's start, Baez missed three games with back tightness. In his return, he went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored. After a solid game at the plate, the shortstop heads back to the bench. Andy Ibanez will play at second base, with Zach McKinstry sliding over to shortstop.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Javier Baez: Two doubles in return
Baez (back) went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored in Friday's 8-2 loss to the Athletics. Baez sat out three games with back tightness, and he returned with a strong showing. It was just his third multi-hit effort in September, and he's batting a paltry .233 (10-for-43) for the month. Overall, the shortstop has a .220/.268/.324 slash line with nine home runs, 58 RBI, 57 runs scored, 12 stolen bases and 16 doubles through 131 games.... See More ... See Less
