  • Royals' Kohl Stewart: Inks contract with Royals

Stewart signed a minor-league contract with the Royals on Tuesday. The deal presumably includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Stewart didn't pitch anywhere in 2022 after missing a large portion of 2021 with an elbow injury, although it's unclear whether he wound up having surgery. The right-hander holds a career 4.88 ERA over 21 appearances -- nine starts -- at the big league level.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Dropped from 40-man roster

The Cubs outrighted Stewart (elbow) off their 40-man roster Wednesday. Stewart concluded the 2021 season on the 60-day injured list while he dealt with elbow inflammation, and the Cubs determined he wasn't worthy of being added back to the 40-man roster heading into the offseason. Before landing on the shelf in early July, Stewart made four appearances (three starts) for the Cubs, giving up eight earned runs on 17 hits and six walks over 13.2 innings.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Moves to 60-day IL

Stewart (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Maddie Lee of NBC Sports Chicago reports. Stewart has been on the injured list since July 6 due to right elbow inflammation, and he'll now be unavailable until at least early September. A timetable for his return hasn't yet been established.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Placed on IL

The Cubs placed Stewart on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with right elbow inflammation, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The righty's first half comes to an end after he allowed a homer, a walk and three unearned runs Monday against the Phillies. Stewart is eligible to return July 16 for the Cubs' first game after the break, but it's unclear whether he'll be ready. Elbow inflammation can often indicate a more serious injury, but there's yet to be any such word from the Cubs.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Returns to Cubs

Stewart was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. Stewart pitched four scoreless, hitless innings and struck out three in his only minor-league outing after being optioned June 12. His last Cubs outing was a tough one, as he allowed five runs in four innings of work. He's replacing Tommy Nance though, who yielded as many runs in 1.2 innings Wednesday.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Sent to Triple-A

Stewart was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Saturday. His ERA shot to 5.68 after he gave up five earned runs in four innings Friday against the Cardinals. Stewart could return to the big-league rotation later this summer if he can show some improvement at Triple-A. Cory Abbott could be an option to take his rotation spot, and Adbert Alzolay (finger) will eventually rejoin the rotation.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: ERA shoots above 5.00

Stewart gave up five earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three in four innings Friday against the Cardinals. He did not factor in the decision. His ERA ballooned from 3.12 to 5.68 with this poor outing. After logging five scoreless innings May 31 against the Padres, Stewart has now failed to record more than 12 outs in either of his last two outings. If Stewart remains in the rotation, his next outing would be on the road early next week against the Mets.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Starting Friday

Stewart will start Friday's game against the Cardinals. The 26-year-old was sent to Triple-A Iowa on Monday but returned to the majors a day later after Adbert Alzolay (finger) landed on the injured list. Stewart made his second start for the Cubs last weekend and gave up three runs over 3.2 innings after allowing only an unearned run across five frames in his season debut.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Rejoins big-league club

Stewart was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. The 26-year-old was sent to Triple-A on Monday but will quickly rejoin the Cubs because Adbert Alzolay (finger) has landed on the injured list with a blister. Stewart could fill Alzolay's spot in the rotation, which tentatively lines up for Saturday versus the Cardinals.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Sent to Triple-A

Stewart was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Monday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The 26-year-old struggled in his second start of the season Saturday versus the Giants with three runs allowed on seven hits over 3.2 innings, and he'll return to the minors with Trevor Williams potentially nearing his return from an appendectomy. Stewart covered five scoreless frames during his first start of the season and could receive another look in Chicago's rotation later in the year.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Suffers first loss

Stewart (1-1) took the loss Saturday against the Giants, completing 3.2 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five. The right-hander impressed in his season debut Monday, holding San Diego to an unearned run over five innings. He was much less effective Saturday, as San Francisco racked up seven hits -- including a home run off the bat off Alex Dickerson -- against him in less than four innings. Stewart induced only four swinging strikes in the contest and missed the zone on 33 of his 79 pitches. Trevor Williams (appendicitis) could return by the end of the coming week, which would likely result in Stewart's removal from the rotation.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Picking up another start

Stewart is slated to start Saturday's game in San Francisco, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. Unsurprisingly, Stewart will pick up a second straight turn through the Chicago rotation while Trevor Williams remains on the 10-day injured list following an appendectomy. While filling in for Williams on Monday in his team debut, Stewart limited the Padres to an unearned run on three hits and one walk while striking out two en route to picking up his first big-league win since July 21, 2019.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Cruises through five innings

Stewart (1-0) allowed one unearned run on a walk and three hits over five innings Monday, striking out two and earning a win over the Padres. The only run to score against Stewart came in the second inning after Fernando Tatis reached base on an error. It was the 26-year-old's first MLB appearance since the 2019 season when he recorded a 6.39 ERA in nine games. Stewart will likely get another turn in the rotation this weekend in San Francisco while Trevor Williams (appendicitis) is on the injured list.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Call-up official

The Cubs recalled Stewart from Triple-A Iowa ahead of his scheduled start Monday against the Padres. The Cubs placed Trevor Williams (appendicitis) on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move, so Stewart will presumably fill Williams' spot in the rotation for as long as he's sidelined. Stewart tentatively lines up for a two-start week, with his second turn scheduled for Saturday's game in San Francisco. Over his four outings with Iowa on the season, Stewart posted a 3.68 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 23:5 K:BB in 22 innings.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Picking up start Monday

Stewart has been announced as the Cubs' starting pitcher for Monday's game against the Padres. Stewart had not even been recalled to the major-league roster as of Monday morning, but he will now take the spot of Trevor Williams (appendicitis), who was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding roster move. Stewart has started in all four of his appearances with Triple-A Iowa, tallying 22 innings, so he should be reasonably stretched out headed into his start.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Moves to minor-league camp

Stewart was assigned to minor-league camp Friday, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. Stewart was potentially in the mix for either a rotation or bullpen spot, but he's apparently not particularly close to either, as he's been removed from both competitions with nearly three weeks left to go before Opening Day. His 4.79 ERA in 62 career innings at the highest level is at least passable, but he's struck out just 12.7 percent of opposing batters. If he does find himself on the big-league roster later this season, he's unlikely to provide the kind of numbers that would interest most fantasy managers.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Could have flexible role this year

Stewart could work as both a starter and a reliever as the Cubs consider the idea of a more flexible six-man rotation, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. Coming off the shortened 2020 season, the Cubs and other teams have to figure out how to manage starters' workloads over a longer schedule, and Chicago may deploy a six-man rotation as a result. Stewart, who opted out of the 2020 season, worked as a starter in limited time with Minnesota in 2018 and 2019. However, the Cubs may use him in more of a swing role between the bullpen and rotation.

  • Cubs' Kohl Stewart: Signs with Cubs

Stewart signed a one-year, $700,000 contract with the Cubs on Thursday, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. Stewart elected free agency in late October after being outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk, but he'll land a major-league contract with the Cubs ahead of spring training. The righty opted out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he'll likely serve as a swingman for Chicago in 2021. Stewart made nine appearances (two starts) for Minnesota in 2019, posting a 6.39 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 25.1 innings.

  • Orioles' Kohl Stewart: Cast off 40-man roster

Stewart cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Stewart opted out of the 2020 season amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and he'll be removed from the 40-man roster heading into the offseason. The 26-year-old made nine appearances (two starts) for the Twins in 2019, posting a 6.39 ERA and 10:8 K:BB over 25.1 innings.

  • Orioles' Kohl Stewart: Option to start Sunday

Stewart is a "strong candidate" to start Sunday against the Rays, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Stewart and Tommy Milone are both being considered for Sunday's start. The right-handed Stewart has yet to debut this season but should still be stretched out enough to provide multiple innings should he get the ball.
