Ottawa put Sokolov on waivers Monday.
Sokolov racked up 21 goals and 59 points in 70 games with AHL Belleville last season but has just 13 games of NHL experience. The 23-year-old will likely fill a similar organizational depth role this year, assuming he clears waivers.
