Right-handed reliever Ryan Madson has signed a one-year deal with the Angels after passing his physical.

Madson will likely receive $6 million-plus for 2013. The deal officially is for $3.5 million guaranteed plus a $2.5 million roster bonus plus $1 million in incentives.

The better part for Madson, 32, is it gives him a chance to close, and for his hometown team. The Moreno Valley product missed 2012 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in his only year with the Cincinnati Reds.

Madson had spent the rest of his career with the Phillies, serving as a setup man before saving 32 of 34 chances as closer in 2011. The Phillies were among the teams that showed interest in Madson this winter.

Madson is likely to close once he is ready. Ernesto Frieri, an effective pickup from San Diego last year, would close if Madson isn't ready start the season. Otherwise, Frieri is likely to be the main setup man of a strong bullpen.

The Angels are believed to be interested in adding one more reliever. They will add a starting pitcher or two but appear to be scouring the mid-market as of now. Danny Knobler reported Tuesday that the Angels are now unlikely to re-sign Zack Greinke.
