Despite their strong start and a 34-26 record that has them just a game out of first place, it's hard to consider the Orioles a true contender in the tough American League East.

But you can hardly blame them for trying.

Orioles general manager Dan Duquette has told other teams that he hopes to trade for a starting pitcher, to address what has become the team's biggest weakness.

The Orioles rotation was a big part of the surprising start, with a combined 3.38 ERA through the first 27 games of the season. In 33 games since then, Orioles starters have a 5.79 ERA.

Opening day starter Jake Arrieta was moved to the bullpen this week, in hopes of solving the problems that have led to a 9.34 ERA over his last seven starts. Tommy Hunter is back in the big leagues now, but has already been sent down twice.

Brian Matusz, who looked so good this spring, has been very inconsistent.

And while Zach Britton is healthy now after beginning the season on the disabled list, the report from his minor-league rehabilitation starts is that "the stuff is so-so, and command is an issue."

Duquette is said to be seeking a veteran starter who can help his younger pitchers develop. It's not yet clear if the Orioles have identified any specific targets.

The Orioles also have issues in the lineup, especially now with Nick Markakis on the disabled list. But Brian Roberts may be ready to make his season debut Tuesday night, and right now there's no question that the rotation is a more pressing concern.
