Manaea (2-3) allowed an unearned run on four hits and struck out three over four innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Pirates. Manaea uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Rodolfo Castro to score the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, and the Giants couldn't pull even again. Over his last four outings, all in relief, Manaea has been solid, allowing two runs (one earned) over 10.2 innings with a 16:3 K:BB. It looks like the Giants are content with the southpaw working behind a bulk reliever for the foreseeable future. He's now at a 5.89 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 47:19 K:BB through 36.2 innings over 12 outings (six starts) this season. The Giants can get by with four starters for a while with off days Thursday and Monday, so Manaea should be available to mop up innings versus Baltimore this weekend or in Colorado next week.... Giants' Sean Manaea: Nabs win in bulk relief
Manaea (2-2) earned the win over Minnesota on Monday, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out eight batters over 3.2 scoreless innings. Manaea was recently moved to the bullpen after struggling for much of the campaign, but he took on what amounted to nearly a full starting workload Monday, tossing 83 pitches over 3.2 frames. The southpaw somewhat struggled with his control and issued three walks, but he countered that by fanning eight batters, tying his season-high mark. Manaea will likely be down multiple days given his hefty pitch count, and he could move back into the rotation or continue to pitch bulk innings behind an opener with Ross Stripling (back) recently placed on the 15-day IL.... Giants' Sean Manaea: Moves to 'pen
The Giants moved Manaea to the bullpen prior to Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Phillies, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Manaea was spotted warming up while the Giants were nursing a 4-2 lead in the eighth inning, but he ultimately went unused. At least in the short term, the Giants are likely to limit Manaea's usage to lower-leverage spots or lefty-on-lefty matchups after he's stumbled to a 7.96 ERA and 1.77 WHIP across 26 innings in his first eight outings (six starts) since signing a two-year, $25 million deal during the offseason. Ross Stripling will stick in the rotation over Manaea now that the Giants have five healthy starters again following Alex Wood's recent return from the injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Can't get through third
Manaea (1-2) took the loss Wednesday, allowing eight runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks over 2.2 innings during an 11-6 loss to the Nationals. He struck out four. Manaea continues to struggle with his new team, posting a 7.96 ERA and 1.77 ERA over his first eight appearances (six starts) with the Giants. If the left-hander can't turn it around soon, he could be relegated to the bullpen when Alex Wood (hamstring) is activated off the 15-day injured list, which could come as soon as this weekend.... Giants' Sean Manaea: Registers first win in 2023
Manaea (1-1) earned the win Friday, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks over five innings in a 6-4 victory over Milwaukee. He struck out six. Manaea finally earned a victory amid his nightmarish start to the season. The former Athletic now has a 7.33 ERA on the year as well as a hefty 1.63 WHIP. The southpaw should not be considered a reliable option until he strings together some quality starts. Friday was just the second time all season that Manaea hasn't given up a home run.... Giants' Sean Manaea: Dinged up in short start
Manaea did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks over two innings against the Padres. He struck out three. Manaea took a 107.6-mph line drive off his leg in the first inning. He managed to finish the frame, but he was out of the game after the second inning due to ineffectiveness. The 31-year-old just pitched 1.1 innings on Wednesday, setting up for Saturday's start to be short regardless. After allowing four earned runs while recording only six outs, Manaea's ERA is up to 7.85.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Starting Saturday
Manaea will start Saturday for the Giants in their game in Mexico City versus the Padres, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Manaea threw 1.1 innings in relief Tuesday against the Cardinals, so he'll be pitching on three days' rest. The left-hander has made three starts and two relief appearances this season and has struggled in both roles (6.61 ERA), although he's been better in his customary starting role with a 5.54 ERA and 15:5 K:BB in 13 innings. He's not a recommended streaming option this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Gives up run Tuesday
Manaea allowed a run on one hit and struck out two over 1.1 innings in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Cardinals. He did not factor in the decision. Manaea was initially lined up to start Tuesday, but the Giants opted to go with John Brebbia as an opener. Manaea then appeared in the second inning and got four outs in what amounted to a bullpen game for San Francisco. With a 6.61 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB across 16.1 innings, it wouldn't be surprising to see the 31-year-old southpaw end up as a bulk reliever against some righty-heavy lineups later in the season. Manager Gabe Kapler is no stranger to using an opener, though it was typically out of necessity with a banged-up rotation in 2022. Since Manaea stayed on his typical schedule, he should be tentatively expected to make his next appearance in Houston next week.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Won't start versus St. Louis
Manaea, who had been on turn to take the hill Tuesday against the Cardinals, isn't expected to make a start during the Giants' three-game series with St. Louis, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Due to the Cardinals' right-handed-heavy lineup, Giants manager Gabe Kapler seems content to optimize matchups by pushing the left-handed Manaea to the back of the team's pitching schedule. Manaea could still be available out of the bullpen for the series in St. Louis, though Kapler would presumably look to spare him from facing off against the right-handed trio of Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado and Willson Contreras. John Brebbia is scheduled to serve as an opening pitcher Tuesday, with right-hander Jakob Junis looking like the top candidate to cover the bulk of the innings out of the bullpen once Brebbia exits the contest. Right-handers Anthony DeSclafani and Logan Webb are slated to start the final two games of the series versus the Cardinals.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Takes first loss of season
Manaea (0-1) took the loss Thursday, allowing five runs on four hits and three walks over 3.2 innings against the Mets. He struck out three. Manaea has struggled so far this season, posting a 6.60 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. Furthermore, the southpaw has not completed the fourth inning in either of his last two starts. The former Padre is tentatively slated to face the Cardinals at home in his next appearance, which will be an important chance to rebound from these last two performances.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Sleeper pitchers for Week 4 (April 17-23)
Sean Manaea beefed up his fastball in the offseason, and it paid immediate dividends when he rejoined the rotation about a week ago. His second start was on the shorter side, but he should bounce back nicely against a Marlins lineup that's especially strikeout-prone.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Early exit in no-decision
Manaea didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 7-5 extra-innings loss to the Tigers, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk over 3.1 innings while striking out four. The veteran lefty needed 82 pitches (53 strikes) to record just 10 outs and exited the game with the Giants down 2-1. Manaea was taken off the hook for the loss when J.D. Davis (leg) went yard in the eighth to tie things up and force extra innings. Manaea has a 13:4 K:BB in 11.1 innings over his first three appearances (two starts) this season, but that comes with a 4.76 ERA and 4.70 FIP. He'll remain in the rotation for now and lines up for a road tilt against the Marlins next week.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Possible waiver wire pickups
The Giants have kept their rotation plans hush-hush for the most part and shocked us all by having Sean Manaea work in relief the first time through. Well, now it seems like he and Ross Stripling have swapped roles, and early indications are it's for the better. Manaea spent some time working with Driveline Baseball in the offseason and came to spring training throwing his fastball and slider 3 mph harder on average. It didn't seem to make much of a difference in those starts, but he piled up 14 whiffs on just 76 pitches in Saturday's gem. Granted, it was against a Royals team struggling to muster any offense, but it's reason enough to take a flier on this harder-throwing version of Manaea.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Sleeper pitchers for Week 3 (April 10-16)
The Giants have been pretty dodgy about who they're starting when, but Sean Manaea looked so good in his first start, with most of his pitches being up 3 mph, that I feel pretty comfortable saying he's not going back to the bullpen. And the Tigers make for a plush matchup.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Pitches well versus Royals
Manaea did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over six innings in a 6-5 loss to the Royals. He struck out eight. Manaea deserved better, but Ross Stripling and the San Francisco bullpen couldn't hold the lead after he exited. The only run Manaea allowed came in the sixth when he gave up a solo home run to Bobby Witt, and outside of that there was very little trouble for the 31-year-old southpaw. Manaea was making his first start of the year after throwing two ineffective innings of relief Monday against the White Sox, and he's forged a 4.50 ERA over his first eight frames of 2023.... Giants' Sean Manaea: To start Saturday vs. KC
Manaea will start for the Giants on Saturday against the Royals, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Manaea came out of the bullpen in his first appearance of the season Monday against the White Sox and gave up three earned runs on two hits and two walks over two innings of work. Now he steps into a rotation spot, at least for the time being. Giants manager Gabe Kapler has been noncommittal about steadily deploying a six-man starting mix.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Could piggyback DeSclafani
Manaea could be used as a piggyback pitcher behind starter Anthony DeSclafani in Monday's game against the White Sox in Chicago, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Manager Gabe Kapler hasn't specifically said that the Giants will maintain a six-man rotation, so Manaea looks as though he could be deployed in tandem with DeSclafani as the team aims to coax quality innings from both pitchers. Manaea had previously been available out of the bullpen for the team's season-opening series versus the Yankees, but he went unused in all three games and should thus be capable of covering multiple innings behind DeSclafani, if needed. After a rough season in San Diego in 2022, Manaea showed some improvement in spring training, as he pitched to a 4.08 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB in 17.2 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .215 average in Cactus League play.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Mixed results in spring
Manaea has allowed six earned runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out 10 over eight innings through three Cactus League starts. It's encouraging to see Manaea missing bats frequently, but what contact has been made against him has often landed for a hit. The 31-year-old southpaw is coming off his worst season in the majors, in which he posted a 4.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 158 innings for the Padres. The Giants have a solid track record of getting the most out of their pitchers, but it'll be on Manaea to pitch well enough to retain his spot in what's shaping up to be a crowded competition for a place in the rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Sean Manaea: Signs with Giants
Manaea signed a two-year, $25 million contract with the Giants on Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Manaea will remain in the NL West after spending the 2022 campaign with the Padres, going 8-9 while posting a 4.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 156 strikeouts over 158 innings in 30 appearances, including 28 starts. The 30-year-old will provide the Giants with another left-handed option in their starting rotation behind ace Logan Webb. In 2023, Manaea will look to bring his pitching numbers back down closer to his career 3.86 ERA and 1.20 WHIP that he had produced over his first five seasons in the MLB prior to 2022.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Sean Manaea: Submits gem to end losing streak
Manaea (8-9) earned the win during Tuesday's 6-2 victory over San Francisco, allowing one hit and one walk with six strikeouts across six scoreless innings. Manaea put the first two Giants he faced on base before retiring the next 18 batters in order to finish with a 75 game score, his best mark since hist first start of the season April 8. The 29-year-old pounded the zone with 50 of an efficient 66 pitches going for strikes, and he undoubtedly would've worked deeper if a playoff appearance for the team wasn't looming. Prior to Tuesday's victory, Manaea had gone 0-3 with an 8.18 ERA in 22 innings across his last six starts, with San Diego falling in each contest. He concludes 2022 with a 4.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP -- the worst and second-worst marks of his career, respectively -- with 156 strikeouts in 158 innings across 28 starts and 30 appearances....
