Lugo (10-2) earned the win over the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk over six innings while striking out four. Lugo did a great job of working his way out of trouble for most of the contest, with the exception of the fourth inning when he allowed back-to-back hits to open the frame and also hit Jason Heyward with a pitch before eventually surrendering two runs. The right-hander allowed just two more hits over his final two innings of work, notching his 11th quality start of the season and his first this month. Lugo is now tied with Ranger Suarez for the major-league lead in wins with 10 and has gone at least six innings in five consecutive outings.... See More ... See Less

Royals' Seth Lugo: Suffers first loss since April
Lugo (9-2) took the loss to the Yankees on Monday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk with four strikeouts over seven innings. Lugo had two rough innings, surrendering three hits and two runs in both the first and fourth frames. While all eight hits allowed in the game were singles, he only generated seven swinging strikes on 101 pitches. Lugo has now given up nine runs combined in two June starts after only yielding nine in the entire month of May, but his opponents in those two outings currently rank second and seventh in runs scored this season. Lugo still owns a 2.36 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 75:20 K:BB in 14 starts and lines up against the Dodgers, who rank fourth in runs scored in 2024, on Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Seth Lugo: Rough night in Cleveland
Lugo came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Guardians, coughing up five runs on six hits and a walk over six-plus innings. He struck out five. Kansas City staked the veteran right-hander to a 5-0 lead, but homers by Josh Naylor in the bottom of the fourth inning and Tyler Freeman in the seventh fueled a Cleveland comeback. Lugo tossed 64 of 98 pitches for strikes before exiting, as he lasted at least six innings for the seventh time in his last eight trips to the mound, a stretch in which he sports a 2.19 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 57:12 K:BB through 53.1 innings. He'll look to bounce back in his next start, which lines up to come at home this weekend against the Mariners.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Seth Lugo: Another strong outing in win
Lugo (9-1) earned the win Wednesday over the Twins, allowing one run on six hits and three walks while striking out five over six innings. Lugo won five of his six starts in May, allowing just nine runs (eight earned) over 40.1 innings in the month. This was just the fourth time in 12 starts Lugo has allowed nine or more baserunners, as he's been one of the most dominant pitchers in the majors this season. The right-hander is now at a 1.72 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 66:18 K:BB over 78.1 innings this season. Lugo's next start is projected to be at Cleveland in a battle between the AL Central's two best teams.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Seth Lugo: Sharp in eighth win
Lugo (8-1) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over seven innings in an 8-1 victory over the Rays. He struck out three. The veteran right-hander was stingy once again, giving up two earned runs or fewer for the sixth straight start despite a lack of dominance Friday (only eight swinging strikes among his 104 pitches). Lugo has gone 5-0 over that aforementioned six-start stretch with a 1.52 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 47:8 K:BB through 41.1 innings, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next trip to the mound, which lines up to come on the road next week in Minnesota.... Royals' Seth Lugo: Strikes out 10 in win
Lugo (7-1) earned the win Saturday over the Athletics, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out 10 over 5.2 innings. Lugo was able to limit the damage to a two-run home run by Seth Brown in the second inning. This was Lugo's second straight start with double-digit strikeouts, though he came up one out short of a fifth straight quality start. The right-hander is now at a 1.79 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 58:13 K:BB through 65.1 innings over 10 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start on the road against the Rays.... See More ... Royals' Seth Lugo: Dominant in win
Lugo (6-1) allowed one run on five hits while striking out 12 and walking none over eight innings to earn the win over the Angels on Sunday. Quality of opponent aside, Lugo was excellent Sunday. He landed 77 of his 112 pitches for strikes and recorded double-digit strikeouts for the first time this season. It was also his first start without issuing a walk. The right-hander is now at a 1.66 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 48:12 K:BB through 59.2 innings over nine starts. Lugo's had good moments both as a starter and a reliever in his career, but his start to 2024 is a completely new level for the 34-year-old. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Athletics.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Seth Lugo: Settles in after shaky start
Lugo didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against Milwaukee, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out five. Lugo gave up a hit and a walk in the first frame, then surrendered back-to-back homers to start the second. After that, however, Lugo retired nine straight batters and kept the Brewers off the scoreboard until the seventh inning. He was seemingly set up for his sixth win of the season with the Royals up 5-3 heading into the ninth, but Willy Adames took Lugo out of contention for the W with a go-ahead three-run home run. Lugo has pitched at least six innings in seven of his eight starts, and he's gone into the seventh five times. He's scheduled to make his next start Sunday against the Angels.... See More ... Royals' Seth Lugo: Fans eight in fifth win
Lugo (5-1) picked up the win Wednesday in a 6-1 victory over the Blue Jays, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out eight. The 34-year-old right-hander generated an impressive 35 called or swinging strikes over 101 pitches as he baffled Toronto hitters. The quality start was Lugo's sixth in seven trips to the mound, and the two-year, $30 million contract he signed in December is looking like an absolute bargain for the Royals. Lugo will take a 1.60 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB through 45 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Brewers.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Seth Lugo: Fans nine over seven scoreless
Lugo (4-1) earned the win Friday in Detroit after he struck out nine and allowed three hits and two walks across seven scoreless innings. The right-hander generated 13 swinging strikes on 103 pitches as he and Detroit starter Reese Olson combined to give up just one run in 14 frames. The swing-and-miss stuff from Lugo was a step in the right direction after he posted a 4.1 K/9 through his first five starts of the season. The beginning of Lugo's tenure in Kansas City couldn't have gone much better though, as he has a 1.66 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 38 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Seth Lugo: Tagged with four runs
Lugo (3-1) allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Sunday, striking out one and taking a loss against the Orioles. Lugo stumbled in the third inning when he allowed back-to-back homers to Colton Cowser and Jordan Westburg. The Orioles later put two more runs on Lugo's line in the sixth. It was his shortest outing of the season and his lowest strikeout total. He'd given up just three earned runs through 25.2 innings prior to Sunday's hiccup. Lugo still owns a terrific 2.03 ERA across five starts. He's projected to take the mound in Detroit for his next appearance.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Seth Lugo: Brilliant again in win
Lugo (3-0) earned the win Monday, allowing no runs, four hits and one walk over seven innings against the White Sox. He struck out four. Lugo looked to be in complete control against a weak White Sox lineup as he scattered four singles and issued only one walk Monday night. The 34-year-old right-hander has been splendid to start the year, posting a 1.05 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 13:6 K:BB over his first 25.2 innings. Lugo is currently scheduled to make his next start against Baltimore at home.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Seth Lugo: Continues strong start to season
Lugo (2-0) earned the win over Houston on Wednesday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two batters over six innings. Lugo induced just five swinging strikes and allowed at least one baserunner in five of his six frames, but aside from a two-run fourth inning, the Astros were unable to score on him. The veteran right-hander has completed at least six frames and has notched a quality start in each of his three outings so far this season, leading to his sterling 1.45 ERA. Lugo's unimpressive 9:5 K:BB over 18.2 innings provides reason to doubt this level of success moving forward, but he showed last year that he can be an effective (if unsensational) rotation piece without big punchout numbers when he posted a 3.57 ERA and 8.6 K/9 across 26 starts for the Padres.... Royals' Seth Lugo: Six scoreless in KC debut
Lugo didn't factor in the decision during Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Twins. He allowed two hits and a walk across six scoreless innings and struck out four. The 34-year-old induced 12 swinging strikes on 86 pitches and didn't allow a baserunner to reach third base, but the bullpen was unable to maintain a 1-0 advantage. Lugo joined the Royals on a two-year, $30 million contract during the offseason after he posted a 3.57 ERA in 26 starts for the Padres last year, and he pitched well in his first start against the reigning AL Central champs.... Royals' Seth Lugo: Successful in spring debut
Lugo pitched two scoreless innings, allowing a hit, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out one in his Cactus League debut Monday versus the Cubs. Lugo admitted to some nerves before the game, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Lugo is embarking on his first season with the Royals after spending his first seven major-league campaigns with the Mets before pitching with the Padres last year. The right-hander projects to be one of the Royals' top starters after pitching to a 3.57 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 140:36 K:BB over 146.1 innings last year, his first as a full-time starter since 2017.... Royals' Seth Lugo: Gets three years, $45M from KC
Lugo finalized an agreement with Kansas City on Tuesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com of MLB.com reports. It's a three-year, $45 million contract, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, with the third year of the deal coming in the form of a $15 million player option. Lugo was connected to a wide range of teams this winter -- including the Mets, Red Sox, Diamondbacks, Reds, Tigers and Atlanta -- but he has opted to join the Royals and should immediately jump to the top of their rotation depth chart. The 34-year-old right-hander worked as a full-time starter with the Padres in 2023 and registered a sharp 3.57 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 140:36 K:BB across 146.1 innings. He had a 3.56 ERA and 124:37 K:BB in 111.1 innings of relief with the Mets between 2021-22.... See More ... See Less -
Seth Lugo: Declines player option
Lugo declined his player option for the 2024 season on Thursday, Ari Alexander of KRPC2 reports. Lugo was set to make $7.5 million in 2024, a mark he should easily top after posting a 3.57 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 146.1 innings last season with the Padres. Entering his age-35 season, this could be Lugo's last chance to sign a contract of significant value.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Seth Lugo: Dominant in eighth win
Lugo (8-7) allowed three hits and three walks while striking out seven over 8.2 shutout innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Giants. Lugo nearly had a shutout, but he put two runners on in the ninth and exited with 123 pitches (80 strikes). Josh Hader was able to secure the one-out save. It appears Lugo saved his best for last this year, with this being his best appearance and his fourth scoreless outing over his last eight starts. The right-hander is at a 3.57 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 140:36 K:BB through 146.1 innings over 26 starts overall. With just four games left on the Padres' schedule, it's possible this was Lugo's last start of 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Seth Lugo: Settles for no-decision Wednesday
Lugo came away with a no-decision Wednesday in the Padres' 3-2 win over the Rockies, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out seven. The right-hander continued a strong run that has seen him deliver six quality starts in his last seven outings while posting a 2.90 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 39:12 K:BB through 40.1 innings, but Lugo only escaped seeing his 7-7 record fall below .500 when the Padres took their first and only lead of the game in the seventh inning. San Diego has stubbornly refused to be eliminated from the NL wild-card race, winning seven straight games, so Lugo's final start of the season -- likely to come next week in San Francisco -- could carry additional drama if his team continues its desperation push through the weekend.... Padres' Seth Lugo: Collects seventh win
Lugo (7-7) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven over six innings to earn the win Friday over the Athletics. This was his fifth quality start in his last six outings, the exception being his road start in Houston last Saturday. Lugo gave up multiple home runs Friday for just the fourth time this year, but they were solo shots from Shea Langeliers and Brent Rooker. Lugo is now at a 3.83 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 126:31 K:BB through 131.2 innings over 24 starts. He's projected for a home start versus the Rockies next week.... See More ... See Less
