  • Cam Hill: Becomes free agent

Hill elected free agency after being outrighted to Triple-A Columbus by Cleveland on Friday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

Hill made his big-league debut in 2020 and had a 4.91 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB across 18.1 innings, but he spent all of 2021 at Triple-A. He's eligible for arbitration, but he'll instead become a free agent after being removed from Cleveland's 40-man roster.

  • Indians' Cam Hill: Activated and optioned to Triple-A

Hill (wrist) was activated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

Hill made 10 appearances during his rehab assignment with Columbus, notching an ugly 12.96 ERA and 2.72 WHIP across 8.1 innings. Given the poor performance, it's understandable he'll spend more time in the minors as he continues to work his way back from offseason wrist surgery. Cleveland has yet to announce a corresponding 40-man roster move.

  • Indians' Cam Hill: Begins rehab assignment

Hill (wrist) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus on Friday.

Hill had offseason surgery on his right wrist, and he's spent the entirety of the 2021 campaign on the 60-day injured list. In his first appearance with Columbus, he struck out two and walked one in a scoreless inning. The 27-year-old will likely need a few more appearances to build back up to full strength. He posted a 4.91 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB across 18.1 innings for Cleveland last year.

Hill (wrist) was placed on the 60-day injured list Saturday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

  • Indians' Cam Hill: Tosses bullpen session

Hill (wrist) threw a bullpen session Monday consisting of 17 or 18 fastballs, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

Hill was cleared to step on a mound for the first time this spring after offseason right wrist surgery delayed him through the first few weeks of camp. Manager Terry Francona suggested that Hill checked out fine during the side session, but the 26-year-old still looks like he'll open the 2021 season on the 10-day injured list.

  • Indians' Cam Hill: Remains in recovery mode

Hill is still in the process of recovering from the offseason surgery he required on his right wrist, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.

Hill went under the knife to address an injury he picked up in a November car accident. While the right-hander is confident that everything is on track with his recovery, he could face an uphill battle to make it back for Opening Day. The reliever made 18 appearances out of the Cleveland bullpen in 2020, posting a 4.91 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 16 strikeouts in 18.1 innings.

Hill shared on his Instagram page that he was in a car accident Monday and needed surgery on his right wrist.

  • Indians' Cam Hill: Earns rare save

Hill struck out two and did not allow a baserunner in a clean ninth inning to earn the save in the second game of Cleveland's doubleheader against the White Sox on Tuesday.

After Brad Hand and James Karinchak were used in the first game of the doubleheader, Hill was called upon to protect a two-run lead in the second contest. He impressed, striking out the first two batters he faced, generating a combined four swinging strikes. Hill has shown the ability to miss bats in the past, as he punched out 36 batters in 24.2 innings of work at Triple-A in 2019. However, without major injuries or struggles in the Cleveland bullpen, Hill is unlikely to draw many more save opportunities this season.
