The Padres optioned Cosgrove to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday. Cosgrove heads to the minors for the first time this season. With the Padres, he has allowed 14 earned runs across 12.0 innings in 2024. Last year, the 27-year-old posted a 1.75 ERA across 51.1 innings. The southpaw will look to regather himself in El Paso and find again what he had going last year. In a corresponding move, Yu Darvish was reinstated from the 15-day injured list.... See More ... See Less

Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Snags extra-inning save
Cosgrove pitched a perfect 10th inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Giants. Regular closer Josh Hader was deployed in the ninth inning to keep the game tied, and he did the job just fine. Cosgrove then worked the 10th, retiring the side on 13 pitches (nine strikes). This was his first big-league save in 52 appearances as a rookie this season -- he's also added six holds and a 1-2 record while mostly seeing lower-leverage work. Cosgrove owns a 1.81 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 43:17 K:BB over 49.2 innings overall.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Returns from IL
Cosgrove (hamstring) was activated from the 15-day injured list Saturday. Cosgrove returns to action after spending the minimum 15 days on the injured list while dealing with a left hamstring strain. The southpaw has pitched well for the Padres this season, posting a minuscule 0.53 ERA and 0.53 WHIP along with a 15:2 K:BB over 17 innings. He hasn't seen much work in high-leverage spots, though, and has yet to record a hold or a save.... See More ... See Less

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell2H agoThe Dodgers remain NL West favorites, and their lead in the standings is still comfortable. But the Padres have proven a formidable challenger through three early series against their division rivals. https://t.co/okU1oL7PgD

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell3H agoFinal: Padres 4, Dodgers 0 They've met once in Korea, once in L.A. and once in San Diego - and the Padres still haven't lost a series to the Dodgers this year. They won Sunday's rubber match behind 7 scoreless from Yu Darvish and solo homers from Tatis, Cronenworth and Bogaerts.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell3H agoWhat a turn through the rotation for the Padres. ELIAS says they're the first team since at least 1893 with four straight starts of at least five innings and two hits or fewer. Dylan Cease against the Cubs on Wednesday, then Michael King, Matt Waldron and Yu Darvish against LA.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell3H agoThat's seven scoreless from Yu Darvish, who struck out six and allowed only two hits. The Padres lead 4-0, headed to the bottom of the seventh.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell4H agoThe Padres scratch another run across on Luis Arraez's RBI groundout and lead 3-0. They've seen 95 pitches through four innings, nearly twice as many as the Dodgers' 48. Feels like these games have often gone the opposite way in recent years.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell4H agoYu Darvish pitching on Mother's Day reminds me that before the Padres acquired him, my mom legitimately thought his name was "Hugh Darvish" for a really long time. Anyway, YU Darvish has set down 12 straight Dodgers to open today's game. Still 2-0 Padres, mid-4.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell5H agoFernando Tatis Jr. and Jake Cronenworth went back-to-back off Walker Buehler. Tatis' was a no-doubter. Cronenworth's was not a no-doubter -- enough doubt, in fact, for it to be ruled a double on the field before replay correctly overturned it. It's 2-0 Padres in the first.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell8H agoGame 43: Dodgers at Padres (Buehler vs. Darvish), 1:10 p.m. PT at Petco Park Same lineup as Friday for today’s rubber match. Love it when an early-season game feels like a Big Game, and I look forward to the overreaction, either way. https://t.co/vizFM0HBqb
