Ever since he moved to left tackle from left guard in 2009, Andrew Whitworth has been one of the best -- and most underrated -- at that position.
As a full-time tackle for the Bengals, he's never been ranked by Pro Football Focus any lower than the 12th-best tackle in the league, and in 2010, by PFF's measurements, Whitworth was the best in the NFL. But last season, Cincinnati left guard Clint Boling was lost for the season, and Whitworth slid one spot to his right to fill in the offensive line.
But now that Whitworth's replacement at left tackle, Anthony Collins, has signed a five-year, $30 million deal with the Dolphins, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said Friday Whitworth would return to left tackle.
Said Lewis, via Fox Sports Ohio: "The position was never open."
OK, so we can forget about Cincinnati going after another left tackle to replace Collins, and we figure Boling will return in 2014 to reclaim the left guard job. Now, the Bengals can turn to their one open spot on the offensive line: figuring out who will replace the just-released Kyle Cook.
