If you're a player on the Washington Football Team roster, now might be a good time to look into getting an extension. On Monday, the club handed out a four-year, $72 million extension to defensive lineman Jonathan Allen to make him a very happy man. One day later, they have done the same with tight end Logan Thomas -- reportedly agreeing to terms with Thomas on a three-year extension, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Originally set to enter a contract year in 2021, Thomas will now be secured through the 2024 season.
Financial details of the extension have yet to be disclosed, but Thomas was set to earn just $2.14 million in base salary this coming season prior to the new deal landing. It's the story of a player who never gave up on trying to figure out how to carve out a longterm NFL career, and now he's done just that.
A former quarterback out of Virginia Tech who got the call as the fourth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2014, Thomas found it difficult to dig his heels in anywhere at the position. He'd spend only one season with the Cardinals before heading to the Miami Dolphins, the New York Giants and the Detroit Lions -- each for only one season or less and having failed to escape the practice squad for both the Giants and Lions. Thomas went on to join the Buffalo Bills in 2016, but not as a QB, seeing as he was moved to tight end by the Lions before being poached by the Bills.
He'd spend three seasons in Buffalo before rejoining the Lions in 2019, but the second stint was short as well, with Thomas being signed in March of that year only to be released in final roster cut-downs at the beginning of September. In 2020, he'd get another shot at becoming a viable tight end when Washington signed him during early free agency in March, but he suffered another hiccup when he landed on the team's reserve/COVID list ahead of training camp. He'd return ahead of the preseason and go on to have a breakout season -- grabbing a career-high 670 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 72 catches.
And he was able to deliver despite seeing a carousel of quarterbacks. But while things remain unsettled at quarterback in Washington, the position Thomas has long since put in his rearview, the team knows who their TE1 will be for the foreseeable future.
