Washington Football Team quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is out for the remainder of the 2021 season. NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday that the veteran signal-caller is undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his hip. "Fitzmagic" wasn't expected back this season, but this surgical procedure settles it.
Fitzpatrick suffered a hip subluxation in Washington's season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers after playing just 16 snaps. He completed 3 of 6 passes for 13 yards and rushed once for 2 yards. The original recovery timetable was expected to be around 6-8 weeks, but that timeline continued to grow. Initially, Fitzpatrick reportedly elected to forgo surgery and rehab himself, but it sounds like going under the knife was unavoidable.
The journeyman signed a one-year, $10 million deal with Washington this offseason, so it will be interesting to see what 2022 holds for Fitzpatrick. It's also possible the 39-year-old decides to hang up the cleats, but surely this is not a season he wants to go out on. The former seventh-round pick is 59-87-1 as an NFL starting quarterback and No. 31 all time with 34,990 career passing yards. He has played for nine different NFL teams.
