Fort Lauderdale, FL (October 14, 1997) -- Tiger Woods' impact on the game of golf transcends cultures all over the world. His fans can soon follow him like never before with the announcement of his official Web site, created through an exclusive three-year relationship with SportsLine USA, publisher of CBS SportsLine. The announcement was made today by Michael Levy, President and C.E.O. of SportsLine USA, Inc. The site is scheduled to launch later this year.
As part of the agreement, Woods has joined SportsLine's board of advisors, a roster that already includes such notable sports figures as Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Shaquille O'Neal, Joe Namath, Arnold Palmer and Cal Ripken. As part of the agreement, SportsLine will be the only site to originate content provided by Woods or to conduct chats with Woods. In addition, SportsLine has exclusive rights to create, host and promote both online and offline versions of the official Tiger Woods Fan Club.
"Golf is a truly international game," said Woods. "My official Web site will let fans around the globe learn more about me and communicate with others who share their love of the game in a fun, interactive format. I am excited about this new venture because it will open the game up to even more fans worldwide."
"Tiger Woods has a following like no other golfer in the past 35 years," said Levy. "His remarkable talent and passion for the game have helped to increase golf's popularity with fans everywhere. Given his international appeal, it makes perfect sense to use the Web as a vehicle for him to interact with his fans around the world. We are proud that Tiger has chosen SportsLine to be home to his official Web site and fan club."
Woods won the U.S. Amateur championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, becoming the first man ever to win the event three straight years. After two years at Stanford University that culminated in his wining the 1996 NCAA Championship, Woods burst onto the professional scene last year, earning PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year honors with two victories and three other top-ten finishes in only eight events played.
In April 1997, the 22-year-old stunned the sports world with his 12-shot victory at golf's most storied event, The Masters, dominating the field with a record 18-under-par score. He has won four PGA TOUR events this year plus one tournament in Thailand, earning over $2,000,000 in prize money.
