Rivera is out of the lineup Monday against the Pirates.
Rivera has been given the starting nod behind the plate in four of the last five games, but he'll give way to Alex Avila for the series opener in Pittsburgh. With Wilson Contreras (hamstring) making encouraging progress, Rivera and Avila are essentially competing for what will be a backup role in the final weeks of the season. Rivera helped his case with a grand slam Saturday, but followed that up with an 0-for-3, two-strikeout performance Sunday. He's recorded at least one strikeout in each of the last six games he's appeared in.
