Tonkin was released by the Rangers on Friday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Tonkin spent last season in Japan and signed a minor-league deal with the Rangers in January. The 29-year-old allowed one run on two hits over 4.2 spring innings, but Texas nonetheless decided to move in a different direction.
