The 49ers placed Matthews (knee) on the injured reserve list Thursday.
Matthews suffered a torn ACL while running a route at practice and it will force the veteran tight end to miss out on the entire 2022-23 season. The 30-year-old has been dealing with knee issues for most of his career. Matthews was considered to have a good chance at making San Francisco's roster before the injury.
