Matheson will miss Tuesday's Opening Night matchup with Tampa Bay due to a lingering lower-body issue, Josh Getzoff of PensTV reports.
Matheson registered five goals and 11 helpers in 44 games for the Penguins last season. Despite his injury, the 27-year-old defenseman should still be capable of getting back over the 20-point mark, assuming he isn't sidelined for a significant length of time. Without Matheson available, Mark Friedman figures to jump into the lineup Tuesday while Marcus Pettersson will fill in on the No. 2 power-play unit.
