  • Padres' Jay Groome: Sent down to Triple-A

Groome was optioned to Triple-A El Paso by the Padres on Saturday. Groome didn't make any Cactus League appearances for the Padres before being given the pink slip. The left-hander is coming off a dreadful 2023 season with El Paso, having posted an 8.55 ERA, 2.10 WHIP and 137:112 K:BB over 134.2 innings.

  • Padres' Jay Groome: Optioned to El Paso

Groome was optioned to Triple-A El Paso by the Padres on Monday. Groome showed some flashes of brilliance in Arizona during the Cactus League with a 1.29 ERA, but he also registered a 13:10 K:BB which showed that the command still has some work to be done. The 2016 first-round pick could be an option for San Diego before the end of the year.

  • Padres' Jay Groome: Could make team as long reliever

Padres manager Bob Melvin said Saturday that Groome has chance of making the Padres' Opening Day roster as a long reliever out of the bullpen, Sammy Levitt of 97.3 The Fan reports. Groome was acquired by the Padres last August in the deal that brought Eric Hosmer to Boston. The left-handed hurler has yet to make his major-league debut, but he's been solid this spring, pitching 10.2 scoreless innings during which he's registered 10 strikeouts. On a less promising note, Groome has walked seven batters, but he appears to be impressing enough to earn serious consideration for a spot on the Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old has pitched almost exclusively as a starter in the minors, so a long-relief role would enable him to stay stretched out enough to work as a spot starter, if needed.

  • Padres' Jay Groome: Dealt to San Diego

The Padres acquired Groome from the Red Sox on Tuesday in exchange for Eric Hosmer, Max Ferguson and Corey Rosier, Sean McAdam of BostonSportsJournal.com reports. The Padres will pay the majority of the money owed to Hosmer and in return they will get Groome back in the deal. Once a big-name prospect after being seen as perhaps the top prep pitcher in the 2016 Draft class, Groome has dealt with injuries and diminished stuff since his days as an amateur. He could still make the big leagues as a back-end starter or swingman. Groome has a 2.87 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 57:30 K:BB in 53.1 innings over his last 10 starts split between Double-A and Triple-A.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Makes Triple-A Debut

Groome allowed five hits and three walks while striking out five over six scoreless innings for Triple-A Worcester on Friday. Groome picked up the win in his first-ever start at the Triple-A level following Thursday's promotion from Double-A Portland. The left-hander fanned the side in the first inning and worked around traffic in four of his six innings. A 2016 first-round draft pick, Groome's rise through the minors was stalled by Tommy John elbow surgery in 2018 and the wiped-out 2020 season due to the pandemic.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Throws five scoreless

Groome allowed one hit and struck out four over five scoreless innings for Double-A Portland on Wednesday. Groome picked up where he left off for Portland at the end of 2021, as he went 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA, .211 batting-average against and 26 strikeouts over 15.2 innings (three starts) for the Sea Dogs last September. His career since being selected in the first round (12th overall) of the 2016 draft has been notable mostly for injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2018. The left-hander threw a career-high 97.1 innings last season and is experiencing his longest stretch of health since joining professional ball. There's still time for the 23-year-old, who stands at 6-foot-6 and 262 pounds, to reclaim the promise he once had.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Sent to Triple-A

Groome was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Groome spent most of 2021 at High-A Greenville before a late-season promotion to Double-A Portland, and he's now set to open 2021 at Triple-A. The 23-year-old had a 5.29 ERA and 108:32 K:BB over 81.2 innings at High-A and 26 strikeouts in 15.2 frames at Double-A.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Tough season continues

Groome was beaten up for eight runs (seven earned) in five innings for High-A Greenville against Hickory on Tuesday. He now owns a 2-8 record, 5.35 ERA, 1.322 WHIP and 100:31 K:BB in 75.2 innings. It's been an awfully tough season for Groome, but he'd actually been pitching noticeably better before this last outing -- over his prior nine starts, he'd posted a 3.74 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. Obviously, his strikeout ability is tantalizing, and considering that Groome is coming back from a series of injuries, the simple fact that he's mostly stayed on the field this season is a major win. With his injury history, the Red Sox will likely continue taking a slow and steady approach to his development.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Struck by liner

Groome was removed from Tuesday's game after being hit by a line drive in the shin, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. The 22-year-old should be considered day-to-day after exiting the contest. Groome has thrown more than 11 innings only once in a season since making his professional debut in 2016 due to numerous injuries.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Shielded from Rule 5 draft

Groome's contract was purchased by the Red Sox on Friday. Groome's talent certainly warranted protection from the Rule 5 draft, but he is very inexperienced for his age (22), due to multiple injuries including May 2018 Tommy John surgery. He returned to the mound this past summer and was throwing simulated games at the alternate training site. Now that he is on the 40-man roster, he could be pushed aggressively, perhaps opening the year at High-A or Double-A.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Pitching in Tuesday's sim game

Groome will throw in a simulated game at the Red Sox's alternate training site Tuesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. He has thrown a couple bullpen sessions, but this will be his first time facing live hitters at Pawtucket. The Red Sox will need to add Groome to the 40-man roster this offseason in order to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, so this will give him an opportunity to show the new front office what they have in him. The 21-year-old lefty hasn't pitched against full-season hitters since 2017 and underwent Tommy John surgery in May of 2018.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Returns to game action

Groome (elbow) pitched a scoreless inning for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox on Wednesday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports. Groome allowed one hit and struck out two batters in what was his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2016. According to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, the lefty was sitting around 93-94 mph with his fastball while topping out at 95.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Tommy John surgery successful

Groome's Tommy John surgery was successful Tuesday, Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston reports. Groome, the 12th overall pick in the 2016 draft, is an exciting talent, but injuries have limited him to just 17 career minor-league starts. He's flashed promise over those starts, posting a 11.9 K/9, but he's also recorded a 4.9 BB/9 and a 5.37 ERA. His surgery will keep him out for the remainder of the season and a large portion of 2019, though he'll still be just 20 years old when he returns.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Will undergo Tommy John surgery

Groome will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday, Sean McAdam of BostonSportsJournal.com reports. This is yet another tough break for the 19-year-old prospect, who has already dealt with a number of injuries during his short professional career. Groome had his 2017 season cut short by a flexor strain in his elbow that forced him to open the 2018 season on the DL, and he'll will now miss the remainder of the season and a chunk of the 2019 campaign after going under the knife.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Will open on minor-league DL

Groome will begin the 2018 season on the minor-league disabled list with a left arm strain, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Groome finished the 2017 season with a similar flexor strain, but he has apparently avoided a serious injury. The 19-year-old is expected to return to Low-A Greenville in a few weeks after starting the season with an injury for the second consecutive year.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Out with forearm strain

Groome was placed on the minor-league DL with a left forearm strain, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. With Low-A Greenville's season coming to a close in the next couple of weeks, Groome will be out for the rest of the season, although the club stated that the southpaw's arm had no structural damage. The top prospect has compiled a 3.52 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over five starts in the month of August, and should be able to recover from this setback by the middle of September.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Makes strong start Saturday

Groome allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out seven over five innings for Low-A Greenville on Saturday. Groome's first full season of professional baseball got off to a rocky start when he strained a latissimus muscle during his first start of the season at Greenville. After a long rehab, he's back with the Drive and, after a three-game losing streak, made his third straight strong start Saturday. The left-hander has a 1.13 ERA, striking out 21 and walking three, over his last 16 innings.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Debuts at Lowell on Monday

Groome (back) pitched 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out three, walking one and giving up one hit for Low-A Lowell on Monday in a rain-shortened game, Kevin Dillon of MassLive.com reports. He finished having thrown 38 pitches, 24 for strikes, before the rains came. The biggest news was Groome coming out of this game in short-season ball healthy after spending two months rehabilitating a back injury suffered during his first start of the season for Single-A Greenville. Another key part of the outing was the left-hander's ability to hit his locations with all three of his pitches, particularly the changeup. The 18-year-old has high upside, but he's at least three years away from reaching the bigs.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Rehabbing with short-season affiliate

Groome (back) has been transferred to short-season Lowell for a rehab assignment. Lowell's season doesn't officially kick off until June 19, at which point Groome will presumably be integrated into the rotation. If he excels through a few appearances, he could rejoin Low-A Greenville. So far this has amounted to a lost season for Groome, so the key will be for him to just remain healthy and pitching, regardless of which level he is at.

  • Red Sox's Jay Groome: Tosses at extended spring training

Groome (back) pitched two innings in an extended spring training game Tuesday, Ryan Hannable of WEEI.com reports. Tuesday marked the first time Groome tossed in a game since injuring his back during his debut for Low-A Greenville on April 10. He apparently got through two innings without a hitch, bringing him one step closer to rejoining the Greenville rotation.
