All it took was a couple of reports, followed by some Twitter retweets and before you know it, rumors of Plaxico Burress interest to the Cowboys sprung up quickly.
And nearly as quick, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones all but dismissed it.
“We haven’t even discussed that internally at all,” Jones said. “That’s not been discussed at any level of our organization, one way or the other.”
Earlier in the day, Cowboys VP Stephen Jones told a Tyler, Texas radio station he wouldn’t completely rule out looking at Burress “at some point.” He also said he’d rather wait until the preseason games were completed, so the young receivers could get a viable shot.
That’s basically the course they took last year when they signed Laurent Robinson one week into the season.
“We would look at any option,” Jerry Jones said. “A lot of Laurent (Robinson) was his availability that caused us to look at him. If someone should become available that we were interested in, but we’re not trying to trade and we’re really looking forward to this round of preseason games to look at these young guys. We don’t have anything on the horizon other than just the normal look of all talent.”
The Cowboys have just three players with an NFL catch under their belts -- Dez Bryant, Miles Austin and Kevin Ogletree. After that, it’s a host of young players fighting for spots, including Andre Holmes, Raymond Radway, Dwayne Harris and Danny Coale, along with undrafted rookies Cole Beasley and Tim Benford.
