The Seattle Seahawks are making a move to add some depth to their secondary. On Monday evening the Jaguars announced they had traded cornerback Sidney Jones to the Seahawks. ESPN's Adam Schefter says the Jaguars will receive a 2022 sixth-round pick in the swap. It's the second trade Seattle has made for a cornerback in the last week after acquiring former Houston Texans cornerback John Reid for a conditional future seventh-round pick, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.
Jones returns home in a way, as he starred at the University of Washington from 2014-16. He made First Team All-Pac-12 in his final two seasons as a member of the Huskies, but suffered an Achilles injury at his Pro Day which caused his draft stock to fall. Still the Philadelphia Eagles decided to take a shot on him, drafting him in the second round with the No. 43 overall pick.
Jones played in just one game in his rookie season due to his Achilles injury, but couldn't shake his lower-body issues. A hamstring injury haunted him through his second and third seasons, and he was cut prior to the 2020 regular season. The Jaguars then took a flier on the young corner, and he started in six of nine games before being placed on IR with another Achilles injury in 2020. His performances in those nine contests were good enough for the Jaguars to re-sign him this past offseason. He recorded 26 combined tackles with a career-high nine passes defended and picked off two passes.
It's interesting that the Jaguars would trade Jones now, but the 25-year-old took to Twitter to thank the team after the transaction was reported. Jones joins a cornerback room headlined by Ahkello Witherspoon, Tre Flowers and D.J. Reed. The Seahawks had the second-worst pass defense in the NFL last season, and lost a top contributor in cornerback Shaquill Griffin -- who funny enough signed with the Jaguars in free agency this offseason. The more the merrier when it comes to Seattle's secondary, and Jones is an intriguing young player with history in the state of Washington. His injury issues are reason for concern, but maybe this is where he can get his career back on the right path.
