Former NFL player Quincy Butler was released from the AFL's Portland Thunder this week after an incident where Butler threw his helmet into the crowd and hit a fan.

The helmet-throwing incident happened during on May 2, when the Thunder were in Philadelphia for a game against the Soul. With just over a minute left in the third quarter, Butler was called for a personal foul and ejected from the game.

To say Butler didn't take the ejection well would probably be an understatement.

Before the next play started, Butler went up to the ref to give him a piece of his mind. After that, Butler took off his helmet and threw it.

It looked like Butler might have been trying to hit the wall in front of Portland' bench, but if that's the case, he totally missed it and hit a child instead.

A Soul spokesman confirmed to OregonLive.com that a child was hit by the helmet, but was unable to give an update on the kid's status.

Two days after the game, the Thunder released a statement announcing that Butler had been waived (or "reassigned" in AFL terms).

The 33-year-old defensive back played in a total of 22 games over four seasons in the NFL, but hasn't played in the league since a stint with the Rams in 2010. Butler spent three seasons in St. Louis (2008-10) and one in Dallas (2006).

Butler later signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL, but was suspended after being charged with assault in May 2014, according to CBCNews.com. After his time with Calgary ended, Butler signed with Portland.
