VIDEO: Patrick Roy's son Frederick snaps at Spengler Cup
Patrick Roy's son Frederick threw quite a fit Thursday while playing for the Rochester Americans at the Spengler Cup in Switzerland.
Frederick Roy showed Thursday that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. The Rochester Americans forward is the son of Colorado Avalanche coach and Hockey Hall of Famer Patrick Roy and it turns out an incredibly short fuse runs in the family, apparently.
With the Americans representing the American Hockey League at the Spengler Cup, an annual holiday tournament featuring top European clubs and a team made up of Canadian pros playing in Europe, Roy got into a heated dispute with Cody Almond of Swiss club Geneva-Servette.
Roy attempted to fight Almond, which is not allowed in the Spengler Cup. So Roy was ejected from the game and, boy, was he not happy about it. NSFW Language Warning.
Roy’s tantrum went off the ice as he screamed a few expletives to no one in particular. A few sticks ended up being victimized outside the Amerks’ dressing room and then… that poor skate sharpener. Didn’t stand a chance.
Rochester, which is the AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres, lost the game 5-0.
Roy has 83 penalty minutes in 22 AHL games this season for Rochester.
Roy did apologize for his actions in this French-language tweet:
Je voudrais m'excusez pour la façon dont j'ai quitté la glace hier. Mes émotions ont pris le dessus et j'ai appris ma leçon.....— Frederick Roy (@frederickroy91) December 27, 2013
In 2008, one of Patrick Roy’s other sons, Jonathan, was suspended for attacking an opposing goalie in a QMJHL game. Both Jonathan and Patrick Roy were suspended five games by the league for the incident, which was often labled as a full-on assault.
Then of course there was Patrick’s coaching debut this year in which he shared his displeasure with Anaheim Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau.
I’d hate to see what happens when someone doesn’t pass the mashed potatoes fast enough at Roy family dinners.
