Middleton has been diagnosed with ulnar nerve irritation in his pitching elbow, but he may not be forced to miss any time, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
The rookie reliever was removed after facing one batter Thursday with an apparent arm injury. Any injury to a pitcher's elbow raises cause for concern, but manager Mike Scioscia downplayed the ailment as a "zinger," adding that Middleton plans to play catch Friday before deciding whether he will be forced to miss any time at all. The 24-year-old has received sporadic save opportunities over the last month, so fantasy owners who were hoping to cash in on additional saves should check back on Middleton's status prior to Friday's game against the Rangers.
