McRae's contract was purchased from Chicago's alternate training site Tuesday.
He will work as a low-leverage reliever going forward, taking the place of Zack Burdi, who was optioned in a corresponding move. McRae, 28, made two relief appearances for the White Sox last season, allowing one hit with two strikeouts over three innings.
