Colts' Frank Reich 'very optimistic' Philip Rivers will play multiple years in Indy

Rivers already has his next job lined up after he retires, but when will that be?

While Philip Rivers found himself without a job after being released by the Los Angeles Chargers earlier this offseason, the eight-time Pro Bowler was able to line up not one -- but two jobs for himself over the past couple of months. The Indianapolis Colts of course signed Rivers to a one-year deal worth roughly $25 million, and he was also named the future head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama whenever he decides to hang up the cleats.

It's interesting that Rivers decided to take this job before he had even taken a snap with his new NFL team, and was a decision that supported the assumed narrative that the 2020 season would be Rivers' last in the league. Even local reporters assumed Rivers would become the high school head coach in 2021. Colts head coach Frank Reich doesn't believe this, however, and said during a Monday conference call that he expects Rivers to play multiple seasons in Indy.

"I can just tell you I really believe it's Philip's intent to play multiple years. I'm very optimistic it will be a multiple year thing," Reich said, via Zak Keefer of TheAthletic.com.

Rivers has been clear that he has not made up his mind concerning his NFL future, and even touched on it during his St. Michael Catholic introductory press conference. 

"I think it's a one year at a time deal right now in my life," Rivers said, via Colin Cahill of NBC 15. "I love playing football right now, I love the Colts organization."

 A year after leading the Chargers to the second round of the playoffs, Rivers endured a rocky season in 2019, throwing 20 interceptions that contributed to Los Angeles winning just five games. In Indianapolis, Rivers will be reunited with Reich, who was his quarterback coach for one year and offensive coordinator for two more seasons with the Chargers from 2013-15. Like Rivers, the Colts are also coming off a disappointing 2019 season, as Indianapolis went 7-9 a year after advancing to the second round of the postseason. 

We should quickly find out if Rivers still has some gas left in the tank or if he truly is on his way out of the league. You have to imagine that if the Colts can put together a nice season for themselves in 2020, Rivers would have more motivation to return for another season.
