The Jaguars entered the 2022 NFL offseason with more salary cap space than all but a few teams. Already, they're putting it to use. Hours into the league's legal tampering period, in addition to reportedly striking a deal with longtime Washington guard Brandon Scherff, Jacksonville is set to pay up for multiple defensive starters. The team on Monday agreed to commit a combined $75 million to former Falcons linebacker Foye Oluokun and former Jets defensive lineman Foley Fatukasi, per NFL Media.
Oluokun, 26, will get a three-year, $45M deal, according to Ian Rapoport, a year after leading the NFL with 192 tackles, the seventh-highest recorded single-season total in league history. A former sixth-round pick out of Yale, who also logged three interceptions in 2021, he will become the fourth-highest-paid linebacker in the NFL, earning an average of $15M per year.
Fatukasi, meanwhile, will get a three-year, $30M deal, with $20M guaranteed, according to Mike Garafolo. The 27-year-old former Jets sixth-round pick emerged as a full-time starter alongside Quinnen Williams in 2021, totaling 46 tackles, five tackles for loss and six quarterback hits. He also started eight games in 2020, finishing with 42 tackles, six tackles for loss and a pair of sacks.
Both additions figure to slot in as immediate starters for a Jaguars defense that struggled at every level in 2021.
