-- Free Service Allows Fans To Experience Real Time Sights And Sounds Of Every Major League Game In Simple, Fun, Interactive Format; Chat Sessions Now Dedicated To Each Game --
Fort Lauderdale, Florida -- June 16, 1997 -- Today's baseball fans want instant, real-time updates of their favorite teams and players. With the award-winning Baseball LIVE!, a free service of CBS SportsLine (cbs.sportsline.com), fans get that and more in a fun, graphical format that features pitch-by-pitch coverage and the sights and sounds of the ballpark that cannot be found anywhere else on the Internet. Now in its third year of service and with many improvements, Baseball LIVE! is the next best thing to being at the game.
Perhaps more than any other sport, baseball lends itself to discussion and second-guessing. Now, Baseball LIVE! is an even more interactive experience, as fans with a java-enhanced browser can chat in rooms dedicated to each game. Armchair managers, even Internet newcomers, can instantly let their feelings be known to others who are watching the same game.
By utilizing Macromedia's Shockwave with Netscape Navigator 2.0 or later or Internet Explorer 3.0 or later, online baseball fans will never miss another pitch. Baseball LIVE! also has an improved interface which makes selecting and switching between games even easier.
Baseball LIVE! allows fans to watch every pitch of every game in "Virtual Stadiums" -- graphical and animated representations of the games. Baseball LIVE! also provides the stadium ambiance -- hot dog vendors ("hot dawgs here...get your hot dawgs"), crowd cheering, organ music (charge!), the crack of the bat, umpires screaming the balls and strikes, players blowing bubbles, check swings, pick-off throws and stolen bases. If a fan
misses a game, or wants to revisit an exciting contest, it can be replayed in its entirety. And, fans can click on any player name to get an update of the player's career statistics.
"As baseball's post-strike popularity continues to grow, fans around the country are once again hungry to find out how `their team' is doing," said 1995 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Mike Schmidt, a member of SportsLine's Board of Advisors and the company's official baseball spokesperson. "Fans at work, school, or even at home -- unable to see their favorite team on the traditional television networks or listen on the radio -- will benefit greatly from Baseball LIVE!. Best of all, baseball fans can see progress of games in an entertaining format."
Baseball LIVE!, winner of the Internet Services Association "Best Innovation" award for 1996, also incorporates an innovative "fandom" feature, which allows the viewer to choose a favorite team in each game. If the viewer chooses the home team, for example, the crowd will cheer wildly for that team and boo the visiting team. If, however, no noise is desired, the viewer can simply turn the sound off.
"We created Baseball LIVE! so that fans could comprehensively follow their favorite teams -- regardless of their geographic locations and/or broadcasting restrictions," said CBS SportsLine CEO Michael Levy. "Baseball LIVE! is a further example of CBS SportsLine's mission to provide the most interactive, multimedia content to online sports fans."
"Baseball LIVE! is what animation and entertainment on the Web is all about," said Christine McCarthy, Shockwave product manager at Macromedia. "Baseball LIVE! exemplifies innovative and creative uses of Shockwave and new media technologies to communicate, entertain and enhance lifestyles. Using Shockwave, the standard for interactive multimedia on the Web, CBS SportsLine has taken the experience of online baseball to the virtual ball park, allowing fans to experience live games in real time in an animated environment."
Online sports fans who do not use Netscape 2.0 or Explorer 3.0 or who cannot download Shockwave, will still have access to CBS SportsLine's Baseball LIVE! through its HTML version, which provides users with batter-by-batter updates in an entertaining graphical format.
