Ford triggered the opt-out clause in his minor-league contract with the Reds on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
The Reds must decide within the next two days whether to add Ford to their 26-man active roster or release him. Ford, 31, is slashing .297/.381/.538 with six home runs over 24 games this season with Triple-A Louisville.
